2/ 2 of the authors, Dr. Jennifer Grant & Dr. Martha Fulford, are from the #UrgencyOfNormal group. It advocates for schools to be open without protections, saying Omicron is mild, even though it hospitalized & killed more kids in 8 mo than 2 years prior!
3/ The Urgency of Normal “toolkit” has been criticized by experts before.
"It's just simply, here is the conclusion we've come to, and here is the argument we would use in favor of this conclusion. And I think it's flawed ... start to finish," says @MarkWKlineMD1.
4/ Let’s start with this fact ⬇️ that the authors ignore when they push for no protections in schools (yes, they are “protections”, not “restrictions”!).
Students do not live in a vacuum. They have parents, grandparents & others who may be vulnerable (or could be after COVID).😬
5/ But what about children themselves? The authors claim that COVID is no worse than the flu for kids. Evidence shows, from hospitalizations & deaths in MULTIPLE countries, that they are wrong.
See Canadian epidemiologist, @DGBassani, explain with Canadian stats:
6/ But isn’t Omicron “mild”? The authors claim it is so. But that’s proven to be magical thinking, cooked up in Dec 2021 by those who didn’t want to care anymore (ex: BC, who severely limited PCR testing & stopped all school notifications).
7/ And they ignore this thread too - which contains multiple links & studies proving the serious effects that COVID can have in kids, even previously healthy ones.
There’s a reason why #LongCovidKids has been trending as a hashtag for over 2 years now.
10/ Another massive error @nationalpost makes when platforming COVID minimizers is the discriminatory, ableist approach that happens w/ zero protections in schools.
Public education access is a basic human right.
@SafeSchoolsBC 🧵on how mask optional policies discriminate:
11/ Notice how the authors focus on a stat of “healthy children” & conveniently avoid mentioning those w/ asthma, immune disorders, diabetes, born premature, cancer survivors & more. Families too.
Is school only for the “perfect” then? What does this say about @nationalpost? 😬
12/ One of the authors, Dr. Pooya Kazemi, even betrayed his opinions in a tweet, before deleting his account.
“Essentially a cold or flu FOR THE HEALTHY ONES” (emphasis ours)
That means immunocompromised should not get an education? His @nationalpost article is basically that.
13/ The authors also claim “teachers are not at greater risk than the general community.”
However, their hyperlink is a study of hospitalizations; nothing about #LongCovid. In BC, education workers are the 2nd highest profession w/ COVID @WorkSafeBC claims, most DURING OMICRON!
14/ @SafeSchoolsBC advocates for schools to be open, but safely. That means clean air with ventilation, filtration & universal masking until clean air is as normalized as clean water.
Not only does it allow ALL kids access to ed’n, it keeps society running w/ less illness.
15/END
It’s 2.5 years into this pandemic. Minimizers prolonged it by encouraging mass infection which gives opportunities for new variants. Those variants evade immunity & reinfect, causing societal disruption.
@nationalpost, you are part of the problem. Stop platforming them.

2) A court challenge in Alberta for the govt to reveal justifications for removing mask protections in schools, revealed that AB gov’s OWN DATA showed that masks reduce COVID-19 cases in schools & in community (less hospitalizations too), yet gov removed masks anyway!
