Took like 3 months to get through (listening) but was highly worth it.
It’s not “another sick person’s story” — It really disentangles the entire mess we are in — with regards to how we treat & view conditions like #LongCovid, it really helped orientate me — and @meghanor’s story is so painfully relatable. Overall very high quality writing.
The way @meghanor shares the tension of her relationship w husband throughout whole journey is so spot on to what I imagine a lot of people are dealing with — unconditional but completely exhausted support that is sometimes a little zoned out & unsure of when to be suspicious.
The historical assessment & evaluation of our current medical system is so illuminating — & well researched — highlights how there is explicit precedent, almost a law of social science — for the medical community to ubiquitously rebuke new unexplained medical phenomena..
Anyways really impressed with the whole thing & not surprised it’s receiving the acclaim it has — this is not a paid ad lol I just really enjoyed it, and it’s almost comically poignant & helpful to our lives rn. Highly recommend.
Very last thing — while there are stretches where she sounds to be clearly bed/couch bound — her story also highlights how you can appear to be a very functional person (Traveling, teaching, public transit, coffee visits) — but be desperately ill & completely drowning in health..
These also stuck with me:
“One of our most difficult duties as human beings is listening to voices of those who suffer”
“It is nearly impossible to adjust to your new identity when the medical community itself refuses to acknowledge the physical reality of your disease.”
@meghanor — and everyone else — any other books (preferably audio) you would recommend to further dive into health / medicine / chronic illness / disability / political etc ?

It can not be overstated how many people — right now — are dealing with #LongCovid symptoms but have no idea what the hell is going on or what to do.
Every week I’m hearing “Long Covid? Is that what this is? I’ve had new issues for months now.”
We have failed.
If your part of the 98% of the population that’s not on Twitter or in the weeds of the latest Medical Journal publications (which clearly even majority of doctors are not) or an avid health news consumer — HOW THE HELL WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT #LONGCOVID IS??
My gf mom is shook by the experience of standing in line at the grocery store & got into convo w/ woman next to her: “This is my first time out in 8 months. I’ve been sick since infection it’s so weird”
Gf mom: “omg you have a #LongCovid — I’m so sorry.”
“I’m desperate to get back to work, but I still can’t work at a desk or talk for more than 20-30 minutes without needing to rest for hours at a time. I feel like people read things like that from #LongCovid patients and think it’s an exaggeration, but I wish it were."
“My first patient was a medical resident who couldn’t return to his hospital duties after COVID-19,” Dr. Svetlana Blitshteyn, Dysautonomia Clinic in Buffalo “He told me that several of his co-workers, including a cardiologist attending, were experiencing the same symptoms."
“In 2012 I was hit by a sudden fever.. over the next 6 months, my health declined.. by December I was almost completely bedbound. The many symptoms were overwhelming.. almost paralyzing fatigue & brain dysfunction so severe, I had trouble remembering a 4-digit PIN for 10 seconds”
“I learned I had post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis.. The illness ended my career as a science & medical reporter & left me 95% bedbound for more than 2 years. As I read about #MECFS I discovered a history.. not only neglected, but also denied. It left me in despair.”
Myself & others spoke to @TIME about how this is a national emergency that "really looks like it’s being hidden intentionally” time.com/6213103/us-gov…
“The only thing that’s preventing me from leading a normal life is the risk that I’ll get #LongCovid,” @ZekeEmanuel says. “I can’t say why people aren’t [reacting like] their hair’s on fire. This is a serious, serious illness.”
"Even public-health agencies seem over it.. President Joe Biden said 'the pandemic is over,'.. The following day, advocates protested in front of the @WhiteHouse that #LongCovid & #MECFS constitute a public-health emergency" @MEActNet
“As many as 21% of Americans who caught the SARS-CoV-2 virus this summer ended up suffering from #LongCovid starting four weeks after infection, according to a new study from City University of New York.”
“The total number of people with #LongCovid in the U.S. is increasing,” epidemiologist Denis Nash, the CUNY study’s lead author. That is, every day more people catch long COVID than recover from long COVID.
This is exhausting. I’m so sick of having an illness my @POTUS refuses to acknowledge — or warn the unwitting millions it’s going to affect — just so people can “feel good” about ordering their pumpkin spice latte with no mask this Fall.
Somebody wake me up.
THERE IS NO INFORMED CONSENT ABOUT THE RISK OF #LONGCOVID
