Truly excited for archaeology and archaeogenetics to go into #NobelPrize territory. Just a note: the wider work on Denisova | and archaeogenetics in general | is very collaborative, and has involved many phenomenal more junior and women scientists
Science is a collective endeavor
One of the most sensational, recent discoveries from the Denisova Cave in Siberia is "Denny": the scanty fossil remains of a young girl, who was a Neanderthal-Denisovan hybrid

Cardinals star DE J.J. Watt, 33, tested positive for covid in late August 2022, and was set to sit out the rest of the preseason.
He just announced he developed atrial fibrillation and "had his heart shocked back into rhythm".
Watt, as far as I know, didn't make any comment about his covid infection and any long-term symptoms. So, I won't go into much speculation here. Just to note arrhythmias like AFib and cardiovascular disease are common in acute and #LongCovid
Organ damage, including in the heart, the kidneys, the pancreas and the lung, is absolutely part of #LongCovid. We know this since 2020 and 2021. Delayed pulmonary embolism and other thrombotic sequelae are part of Long Covid. We have known for ages
We need to be crystal clear about the long-term damage inflicted by SARS-CoV-2 to the body. We need to be crystal clear about the evidence we have since 2020 and 2021. People's lives are at stake. Patients were there to bear witness of this damage in the early pandemic already
Policy makers and other actors have little interest in letting the public know about the reality of #LongCovid. They have little interest in providing crystal clear testimony about the range of physical damage inflicted by the SARS virus they left to spread
"The work was an international collaboration led by researchers from Australia, with Dr Arutha Kulasinghe from the University of Queensland’s Diamantina Institute and Ning Liu from Victoria’s Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research co-lead authors."
"Direct research on the hearts of COVID patients who have died from the disease has revealed they sustained DNA damage in a way completely unlike how influenza affects the body."
"I had hoped for a full recovery by October but I'm still very fatigued and will not be able to join this leg. I'm personally gutted as our original bass player has returned, Eric Avery. We wanted to bring you the original line up but that will have to wait until I am recovered.”
Guitarist Dave Navarro, 55, joins a long list of celebrities, including in the performing industry and elite sport, who have been speaking up about their fight with a severe acute covid case, and/or #LongCovid.
Cardiovascular and clotting disorders are a key facet of covid and #LongCovid. We know since 2020. Many of us have been trying to push for recognition of this in 2020 to 2021 already. The scientific evidence is crystal clear. We are facing a tsunami. Failure to alert is egregious
Minimizing of the severe, sometimes life threatening, multi-system effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection is equally egregious. Devastating long-term effects have been discussed as "palpitations", some "fatigue", some "brain fog". This in the press, policy makers and health bodies
The evidence goes back to 2020. It builds on the lived experience of patients who were experiencing severe disease and evenys, like lung pathology, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, hypoxia, severe neurological issues, and emergency visits.
It was not exactly the "pandemic" to force recognition of prolonged disease from viral and other infections
It was the herculean, coordinated effort of advocates and patient-researchers. Many of whom were left with no care to live or die on their own
Recognize human agency first
Many advocates for post viral illnesses are women and people from marginalised/minoritazed communities. People with disability. Not everyone is on television or well enough or interested in giving interviews. Not everyone is privileged enough to have access to the press
Language matters. It's just a title. The contingency and scale of the pandemic certainly helped the issue of post infectious diseases go viral. But a *huge* amount of work by advocates, often beahind the scene, went into this.
