MAJOR WIN FOR GUN SAFETY: As political rhetoric aims to divide us on gun safety, we're seeing cities and states - blue and red alike - take action to ensure families understand how to securely store their firearms.
Here’s what you need to know. 🧵
Thanks to countless hours of organizing and educating by @MomsDemand volunteers, school districts across the US have sent secure storage info to millions of families. It's a huge step forward in the fight to keep kids safe from gun suicide, homicide and unintentional shootings.
As students returned to school, Texas @MomsDemand volunteers in McKinney successfully advocated to have our BeSMART guidance sent home in the district's latest newsletter.
And last month in Frisco, Texas, volunteers showed up to meetings, testified in front of the school board, and fiercely advocated to help pass a BeSMART secure storage resolution.
While those meetings were rowdy, @MomsDemand never backed down from the fight - and they secured a MAJOR win for the safety of students across Frisco ISD. #BigMomEnergy
Weeks later, the Little Rock School Board followed suit. With encouragement from Arkansas @momsdemand volunteers, the school board voted UNANIMOUSLY to adopt a secure firearm storage resolution.
After attending our annual GSU event, Alaska @MomsDemand volunteers worked with Anchorage School Board President @BellamyMargo to take action. The President drafted the resolution, introduced it to the board, and @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand advocates helped her pass it.
Secure storage is one of the most effective tools to keep kids safe from gun violence. With more guns in homes than ever before, resolutions like these can save countless lives - and we won’t stop until all students attend schools with secure storage notifications! #KeepGoing
I’m so proud of the @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers and survivors who work day-in, day-out to protect their communities.
If you want to help us get the word out about secure gun storage where you live, text READY to 644-33.

A judge blocked the city of Philadelphia from enforcing its ban on firearms in recreation facilities after a gun lobbying group argued the state’s preemption law only allows gun regulations to be created at the state level, not by local jurisdictions. cnn.com/2022/10/04/us/…
Since 2019, 300 reported incidents of gun violence have occurred at Philadelphia recreation facilities, in addition to dozens of other incidents of violence with a deadly weapon. The Mayor’s Executive Order was intended to protect the safety of children, families and staff.
Over 40 states prohibit local governments from regulating guns - aka, preemption. The NRA's strategy has been to pass preemption laws state by state and prevent city officials from acting to stop gun violence when state lawmakers won't.
THIS WEEK I'll be in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin to help @momsdemand volunteers and other gun sense champions running for office. Here's the info - hope to see you there! 🧵
ILLINOIS: Come support @momsdemand volunteer and gun sense champion Rep. Maura Hirschauer (@votemaura) in Springfield on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Dr. Oz is blaming school shootings on the legalization of recreational marijuana and COVID school closures, which he said made children “willing to play with guns … in ways that none of us would have ever accepted.” He provided no data and, of course, did not blame lax gun laws.
Pennsylvania US Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz once endorsed red flag laws and called for an end to the ban on CDC funding for gun violence research, but now says he supports gun violence against members of an “overly intrusive government.” #pasen
Dr Oz also celebrated an endorsement from the infamous anti-Semitic, racist, misogynist, gun extremist who once said George Floyd was a “thugpunk” who deserved to die.
Control of the US Senate will likely come down to three races: Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania. The party that wins two of those three is poised to hold a narrow majority.
Pennsylvania Senate: “A John Fetterman victory over Mehmet Oz would singlehandedly open up the Democrats' path to the majority. But if Oz comes from behind to win, it would be a sign that the polls underestimated the depth of Republican enthusiasm and economic malaise.”
Nebraska-02: “Rep. Don Bacon regularly wins a critical mass of Democrats in a Biden-friendly suburban Omaha district. But Democrats nominated a more moderate challenger this year — state Sen. Tony Vargas. A Democratic upset here would be a major red flag for GOP prospects.”
Today marks 5 years since 60 people were shot and killed and 411 more were wounded at the Rt. 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas. It also marks 7 years since 9 people were shot and killed and 8 more wounded at Umpqua Community College.
Here are some of their stories 🧵
We can never forget the lives taken and the lives that were forever changed by these horrific acts of gun violence. (CW: graphic descriptions of gun violence)
“I wore my concert wristband for a couple of months after and then decided to tattoo [it] on my wrist because Route 91 is with me everyday… My life has been forever altered by gun violence, and I wouldn’t wish this kind of trauma on my worst enemy.” momentsthatsurvive.org/tribute/reina/
