We’re less than a week into National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The stories of companies talking about the value of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access are everywhere.
The truth that far too many of us in the disability community know however, is that for many of them, the goal is optics over action.

-A woman went viral on @tiktok_us after exposing her employer for not accommodating her for her dyslexia and ADHD, The @dailydot reports.
-A worker with a back condition was fired from Virginia-based Resource Metrix after she requested an ergonomic chair, according to the @USDOL in a story published by @newsobserver
- @WaltDisneyWorld is under fire after a Cast Member took them to task in a public @MetaNewsroom post for refusing to accommodate her Cerebral Palsy.

These are not isolated instances.
Rather, they represent a small fraction of the injustices faced by disabled people in the workplace every day.

To combat the stigma, many of us don’t disclose, opting instead to work without accommodations and subsequently struggle to perform.
Paradoxically, this often leads to being fired, perpetuating the myth that disabled people aren’t cut out for gainful employment. All of this while we watch leadership in our organization tout disability awareness and inclusion from the rooftops.
Meanwhile, the effects of long COVID continue impacting the workforce.

Up to 4 million people are estimated to be out of work because of long COVID symptoms, according to @BrookingsInst's August report.
Between Sept. 14 and Sept. 26, more than one in four adults with long COVID reported significant limitations on day-to-day activities, per the @CDCgov data.
The number jumps closer to 40% for respondents who are Black, Latino or disabled — three groups disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

Employers must do better providing accommodations for employees. As the disability population increases, the demand will skyrocket.

When the pandemic first began in March 2020, disabled people sounded the alarm. We tried desperately to talk about how deadly and disabling this pandemic would be, and the general response was to dismiss us. THREAD 👇👇👇
We were "othered", told our lives didn’t matter, told not to disrupt your fun and stay over there. As we so often are. As it became increasingly clear the pandemic would affect the masses, a national emergency was declared. The country, at least for a while effectively shut down.
Precautions were taken, and for a brief time it seemed we were all in this together. Over two years, and 1 million deaths, later it seems the pendulum has swung back toward indifference.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) is a topic advocates talk about daily. So much work is happening and yet simultaneously so much work remains. Oftentimes, I think of advocacy the way I think of a book jacket.

As the @wef kicks off in Davos this week, I thought it was important to highlight the @Valuable500 Initiative
the largest global network of chief executives committed to disability inclusion. Launched in 2019, the initiative aims to “set a new global standard for workplace equality and disability inclusion by engaging 500 private sector corporations to be the tipping point for change and
