#TamilNadu current population is ~7.7Cr. Out of 194 countries in the world, only 19 countries have populations larger than #TN. Of that 19, only Bangladesh has more population density. So, Tamil Nadu is one of the most densely populated(~600per sqkm) regions in the world 1/3
Tamil Nadu is 7th largest state in terms of population in India. It is 10th largest "state" in the area. It has 3.96% of India's landmass 5.5% of its population. It has ~1.2% of utilizable surface water in India, that is ~850TMC out of ~75000TMC national utilizable water 2/3
#TamilNadu population density is ~600 people per sqkm. It is the fifth most densely populated "State" in India. India's avg population density is ~425 people per skm. TN state area is 3.21 crore acres incl all rivers, forests, roads..etc. That is 0.4 acre of land per person 3/3
I created this post to show, how Tamil Nadu state compares with the world region. Since we never go outside India to get a clear picture of TN population and density. This is to show. Visualizing/relating data is the core idea of geography. NZ is just -51lakh..etc 3b/3
Tamil Nadu is 6th largest state in population density not 5th*
This is to show that without acquiring lands, no infra project could be done in TN, since, we are "one of the" most densely populated regions in the world. In population TN comes 20th in the world but in GDP, TN comes in 46th in the world. We are poor than global avg
In per capita GDP, TN comes 132 in the world with ~3900 USD per capita much lower than world per-capita of ~12000USD

Present cultural/religious historical debate are amusing. Current avg age of TN is 30yrs old. If the state does not develop economically within next 15years, it will never develop. If not now then its never. We can fight religious, cultural and caste war later 1/4
Our state is poor compared to global avg in gdp and many health indicators. This is a time, we need to have pointed focus on economy, wealth creation and job. Providing better drinking water, education, air, environment. To create strong foundation for future 2/4
If TN get distracted based on religious, cultural line, it will be a historical injustice to the future generation. State need to focus on diverse economical & career opportunity, otherwise, we will loose our intelligent people. Left with passionate people debating in street 3/4
Katteri waterfalls formed by Katteri river in the southern Nilgiris dt in #TamilNadu. Katteri river originate near Lovedale at the height of 2300m. It is a major tributary of Coonoor river, that joins Bhavani. Katteri river has two small scenic dams & numerous waterfalls 1/2
Southern Nilgiri's with places like Huligal, Manjacombai-Geddai, Kinnakorai are less crowded scenic natural treasures. They have many natural streams, waterfalls, thick forest, estates..etc. 2/2
Bangalore sits above 2900ft, one have to be master in bad planning to flood a high altitude, rich metro city.
All cities are not made equal, cities like Mumbai & Chennai with their flat terrain, costal tides, heavy rainfall are geographically flood vulnerable. #bangalorerains
I meant, places like Bangalore, flood mitigation is easier & less trivial/complex. You need to follow gradient, valleys.Higher flow speed meant small drain could evacuate more water, it doesn't stagnate in this terrain. Old Bangalore withstood these rain with avg drain system 1/n
Chennai/Mumbai sit in 5-7m height, water flow very slowly, stagnate more. In these "Mega cities", canal depth cant go above 5m(shallow), otherwise sea water will enter the city. They also receive heavy rainfall. So, flood mitigation is non-trivial and complex plan is required 2/n
#TamilNadu comes in top 5 state in India in-terms of Bird diversity. State recorded >560unique bird species(~40% of India). Our hills, wetlands, plains/lakes filled with diverse bird species. This video shows birding in Nilgiris by famous wildlife biologist Surya Ramachandran 1/3
Every stream has its own story from insects, mammals, amphibians, birds..etc. Small stream will inhibit 10000's of insects that keep the forest healthy by controlling un-necessary larva's, mosquitos.etc. This video shows damsels in streams of Nilgiris 2/3
By building dams, we are not just storing the flood, but we are also stopping the small dry month flows, that is the important lifeline of the forest eco-system. Kindly refer Surya Ramachandran YouTube channel to know more about our wildlife. 3/3
As per request. In this long thread, I had added all my twitter threads covering Tamil Nadu's eastern ghats. Its a long thread that covers most of the #EasternGhats
Let start with #Parvathamalai in #Tiruvannamalai dt 1/n
#TamilNadu often seen as a flat/plain state. But TN has the highest land area above 1000m and 2000m height in south India also in "Non-Himalayan" India. TN has 5312sqkm area above 1000m height, 875sqkm land area above 2000m. At the same time, 85% the state lies below 500m. 1/7
Tamil Nadu also has highest number of people living above 2000m in Non-Himalayan India. But when we add Himalayan state, old J&K (incl PoK) has ~1,41,000sqkm area situated above 4000m height😯. Arunachal, Himachal, Uttarakhand all has huge land area above 4000m height. 2/7
#TamilNadu also ecologically a diverse state, with marine reserve, diverse forest type from every green forest to thorny scrub, wetlands/mangroves, coral reeves, rich sand-dunes, large delta. It has 4 sea coast each with unique character, 17 bird sanctuaries. 3/7
