I spent my getting-ready morning time listening to the @Ologies episode on tortoises with @biophiliamanda. A couple of observations. 1/n #ologies #sciencecommunication #appliedlearning #fieldwork
@Ologies @biophiliamanda First: Tortoises. Tortoises are turtles, and I love turtles. Once, in Australia, while snorkeling off @LadyElliotGBR, I saw sea turtle and started following her and when she finally dove too deep for me to follow I surfaced and realized that while I could not see the boat 2/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda ... I could see my now-husband, who COULD see the boat, and had followed me, knowing I was on some hyper-focused lack-of-self-preservation quest. (Choose your partners well!) Back to Ologies, though. 3/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda Turtles aside, I'm an infovore. In a previous career, I was a librarian. I used to tell people I chose library science because I couldn't focus long enough on one thing to get a PhD in anything, but wanted to stay on a college campus forever. Still true. Enter @Ologies. 4/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda I have no idea how I found Ologies. I do know that i discovered @alieward was part of @BrainchildShow while watching with my kid AFTER I found Ologies. Look! She has a face! And she's making the kind of learning I love accessible to my kid! WOOOOOO! 5/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow Because I need my learning to be both deep but also scattered. I need to deep dive, but in 75 different places. I thrive on gathering lots of really niche information about things that seem, on the surface, utterly unconnected. 6/n #adhd #adultadhd #hyperfocusproblems
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow So @Ologies is spectacular for me. It's people talking about what they love, but it's also totally fuxkin' random. It's like brain candy. It's also an absolute endorsement for the work I'm doing right now in hands-on education in college. 7/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow My job is Director for Applied Learning. According to a colleague, I'm the "architect of our applied learning strategy". I think that's going too far, but it sounds awesome. I connect people, programs, students, and learning. I love it. 8/n #highimpactpractices #appliedlearning
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow I 100% believe people learn best when they are applying the knowledge they're taking in. Am I gonna remember everything about tortoises after listening to Ologies? No. Will @biophiliamanda, after she's spent this part of her career working with them? YES. 9/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow And I will go to the wall arguing that students learn better and more comprehensively and with more integrity - regardless of discipline - when they put that disciplinary information to use. This isn't always something academics want to hear. 10/n #academia #experientialeducation
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow But we have data. We're gathering new and more data. It's out there. The librarian in me says "look it up" but the realist in me knows you're all poop googlers, so ... look it up but do it in academic databases? 11/n #informationliteracyisdead #infolit #poopgoogling
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow Aside: "Poop Googling" is when you sit on the toilet and google something and call it research. A medical friend of mine uses this to describe most of the "research" their patients do about their conditions. 12/n #poopgoogling #informationliteracy #infolit
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow Data shows that students who complete #HIPs are more likely to stay in college, particularly if they're minoritized or #firstgen. Why? Because HIPs create connections, between the student/college, student/knowledge, college/community. 13/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow Connections are CRITICAL. Connecting the dots is what makes someone a critical thinker, a problemsolver, a team member, an innovator. And nothing connects the dots in higher ed better than #appliedlearning. Nothing. (fight me.) 14/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow Internships, mentored student research, study abroad, service learning, volunteering, student teaching, field work - How many of the @Ologies experts *didn't* do something like that? I'm betting it's a smallllllll number. Because impassioned learning connects the dots. 15/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda @alieward @BrainchildShow And that's the story of how I came into work today energized about what I do, because I listened to a podcast about tortoises. It's all connected. 16/16 #appliedlearning #sciencecommunication #highimpactpractices #academia #experientialeducation
