With less than two weeks to go until the election, I’m in Ohio and Pennsylvania this week to support gun sense champions like @timryan & @nanwhaley in Ohio and @johnfetterman & @joshshapiroPA in Pennsylvania.
Join me this week at events in Cincinnati, Columbus and Philadelphia.
THURSDAY: I’ll be with Cincinnati @momsdemand volunteers to support gun sense candidates up and down the ballot.
NEW: FBI background check done by a licensed gun dealer blocked the St Louis school gunman from buying an AR-15 on Oct 8. The denial reason is unknown, but likely that the state had adjudicated him to be mentally ill. An unlicensed dealer sold him the gun. ksdk.com/article/news/c…
The gunman bought a AR-15 from an unlicensed seller who had legally bought the gun from a licensed dealer in 2020. St. Louis police said THERE IS NO EXISTING LAW THAT PREVENTED THE UNLICENSED SALE, WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE A BACKGROUND CHECK IN MISSOURI.
Police said they responded to a domestic disturbance on Oct. 15 at the family's home, but determined that the suspect was lawfully permitted to possess his firearm: "A third-party was contacted and took possession of the firearm so that it would no longer be stored in the home."
NEW: The family of the teen gunman who murdered a teacher and student in a St. Louis school had recently called police and asked them to take his AR-15. There's no Red Flag Law in Missouri, so police gave the gun to a third-party, but the teen got it back. abcnews.go.com/US/st-louis-sc…
Per usual, lots of red flags in this case, from a "manifesto" to police being called to the shooter’s house at least six times - once for a suicide attempt. But because Missouri doesn't have a Red Flag Law, police couldn't remove his guns and determine if the teen posed a danger.
The new Bipartisan Safer Communities Act establishes an enhanced background check process and investigative period for buyers ages 18, 19 and 20, including checking with state and local law enforcement and state or local courts before a sale proceeds.
Police say Texas’s new permitless carry law is leading to more spontaneous shootings: “Now that everyone can carry a weapon, we have people who drink and start shooting each other … instead of reaching for a fist, they reach for a weapon,” a sheriff said. nytimes.com/2022/10/26/us/…
In Harris County, criminal cases involving illegal weapons possession have sharply increased since the new law went into effect: 3,500 so far this year, as of the middle of October, versus 2,300 in all of 2021 and an average of about 1,000 cases in prior years going back to 2012.
Does the gun lobby give a shit? Nope: they want to lower the permitless carry age from 21 to 18: “It would be appropriate to move the age for permitless carry to 18. There’s no reason why a legal adult should not be able to defend themselves,” Rachel Malone, Gun Owners of America
COLORADO: Your GOP candidate for Attorney General refuses to share the survey that got him an A-rating from the NRA. He claims it’s because he’s a hunter. Bullshit. The NRA gives As to people who support their deadly agenda.
If @JohnKellnerCO thinks we believe the NRA have him an A-rating because he’s a hunter and a veteran, he must think Coloradans are real dumb.
Here are some of the questions:
Would you oppose any type of restriction or ban on any type of gun ownership, sales or manufacturing?
Some local officials continue to seek repeal of penalties [on cities and counties that create their own gun safety policies, despite state law], claiming they shouldn't be punished for breaking the law. Who do you believe?
BREAKING: Police say the 19-year-old St. Louis high school gunman originally tried to buy an AR-15 at a local gun show, but was turned down. Ultimately, he was able to purchase the gun from a unlicensed dealer. ksdk.com/article/news/c…
However, the teen had no criminal history, hadn't been adjudicated mentally ill, and there's no age limit or background check requirement to buy a long gun in Missouri. So it may be that the dealer at the gun show felt he was dangerous and used commonsense in refusing the sale.
That's why the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is important; the law establishes an enhanced background check process and investigative period for buyers ages 18, 19 and 20, including checking with state and local law enforcement and state or local courts before a sale proceeds.
LOOK: Missouri has no age limit to buy and carry this weaponry. The 19-year-old school gunman in St Louis had an AR-15 and 600 rounds of ammo in 30-round magazines. There’s no background check or permitting required to carry these guns loaded, in public.
The 19-year-old wasn’t old enough rent a car, but he could buy weapons of war. Meanwhile, the NRA and its GOP allies want to lower the national age limit to buy a handgun to 18, even though 18 to 20-year-olds are FOUR TIMES as likely to commit gun homicides as adults over 21.
Not only are MAGA Republicans saying there’s nothing they can do to stop gun violence, THEY’RE MAKING IT EASIER.
Here’s Missouri @GovParsonMO celebrating passing the Second Amendment Preservation Act, forbidding enforcement of federal gun laws more stringent than the state's.
