exactly 1 year since #KooyongIndependents launched their search for the perfect candidate… and found what they were looking for in @Mon4Kooyong.

how it started: how it's going:
the day that advertisement ran in @theage and the @FinancialReview, frydenberg acolyte #TimSmithMP got pickled early in the evening, drove his jaguar into a house (still not fixed!) and blew 0.131 BAC.

coincidence?

ha! apologies to @AnnCapling — she sent me that great photo of @Mon4Kooyong and… great minds think alike!

…and a big shout out to:
@Integritynow2 #OliverYates
• @VoicesofKooyong &
• @votejoshout
…for preparing the ground for the magnificent win in #kooyong in '22.

.@JEChalmers missing the opportunity to say “it’s not my job to predict the end of the invasion of ukraine, but it is my job to mitigate the impact of putin’s actions on the australian people, and that’s why we’re…” #insiders
gas overwhelmingly sets the electricity price. the invasion of ukraine has upended global gas markets, setting int’l gas prices soaring.

unlike WA, the east coast gas price (and therefore largely the electricity price) is determined by int’l gas prices. @SydneyDogWalker

🤓 today i visited the site of australia’s first nuclear power station* — the jervis bay nuclear power plant.

*project cancelled in 1971, in the very early stages of construction

(ironically the lights are solar powered.) Image
geotechnical works were undertaken and an area was cleared just behind the stunning murray’s beach to build the 600MW(e) UK-designer “steam generating heavy water reactor”.

it was proposed in 1969 & supported by PM gorton, but when PM mcmahon succeeded he deferred the project. ImageImage
treasury determined that it would have been more expensive than coal, and after gas was discovered in bass strait, the project cancelled.

the remains of the project host one of australia’s biggest beach car parks and a lovely swamp. #GeekTourism ImageImageImage

if you’re commenting on the european energy crisis, make sure you understand this: increased coal & gas generation mainly due to drought & nuclear outages.

(nb. this is the electricity sector, not the entire energy sector.)
i got a lot of hate on 👆 from the usual nuke bros.

yes, of course some of the deficit is due to germany prematurely (and unwisely) shutting down their nukes, but *most* of the nuke deficit this year is from france:

data: ember
this is the *worst* year for nuclear in europe for a long time:

'let's have a sensible discussion about #nuclear'

hmm, sending two scientifically-challenged hacks (i'm being generous) to australia for the 'conservative political action network' conference next month to appear alongside these drongos won't help!

you know you've made it when:
last week @ShellenbergerMD told congress there's no climate emergency & US should increase oil & gas production.

he takes credit for others' achievements, argues using dodgy data, advocates *for* nuclear weapons proliferation, etc.

ie. he's dodgy AF:

drilledpodcast.com/the-worst-poss…
like patrick moore & bjorn lomborg etc, he's found a niche as a professional contrarian.

conservative media lap up his "on behalf of environmentalists everywhere, i would like to formally apologise for the climate scare" schtick.

…and crap like this:

recently i had lunch w/ liberal MP… we discussed decarbonisation — @theage found it newsworthy.

last week i had lunch w/ labor MP… we discussed decarbonisation — @mrjoeaston found it newsworthy.

(lunch w/ an indie and a green next?)

meh. but i must correct joe on 2 things…
this is false @mrjoeaston.

payment of a candidate's campaign expenses is _absolutely_ a donation under victoria's strict campaign finance laws.

any suggestion that i'm flouting the law is both insulting and false.

(the major parties have *massive* loopholes… indies do not.)
this is also false @mrjoeaston.

1. dr ryan did _not_ make any such claim/confession/threat

2. there is no "Holmes a Court Party"

3. i don't speak for dr ryan, nor does she speak for me.

a week ago @parnellpalme wrote an op-ed, which, among many false and nasty comments included this falsehood:

"@Climate200 has already indicated it plans to run teal candidates in the coming Victorian state election."

climate 200 has _not_ indicated any such thing.
C200 has never run a candidate and will never run a candidate.

we _have_ said that we are open to supporting candidates in the coming vic state election, if asked, which is very different.

mcguinness' opinion piece shows she does not understand the movement she writes about.
i have asked her to edit the article — to remove the error — on sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday and yesterday.

no reply.
