Count started in Brazilian presidential election 2nd round. Bolsonaro is expected to be ahead at the beginning. #Eleicoes2022
Opinión polls for the 2nd round of the Brazilian presidential election were giving Lula a 4 point advantage over Bolsonaro, but opinion polls underestimated Bolsonaro's vote in the first round. #Eleicoes2022
With over 50% of the polling stations counted, Lula and Bolsonaro are very close, with Lula increasing its percentage and Bolsonaro decreasing his. #Brazilelections#Eleicoes2022
With 68% of polling stations counted Lula is ahead of Bolsonaro and the trend is for Lula to increase the advantage. #Eleicoes2022
83% counted, Lula is ahead of Bolsonaro but the difference is less than one percentage point. #Eleicoes2022#Brazil
#LulaPresidente2022 has won the Brazilian presidential election in the 2nd round. With 98.5% of polling stations counted he is ahead of far right president Bolsonaro by 2 million votes. That settles it. #ELEICOES2022
The second round of the Brazil presidential election was marked by an unprecedented campaign of fake news by Bolsonaro, widespread attempts at voter suppression by the Highway Police, violence. In the end Lula won, but by a very narrow margin.
Far right Bolsonaro's defeat and Lula's victory is being rightly celebrated in the streets. However a word of warning is necessary:
-Lula's runing mate is pro-business pro-austerity Alckim
- Bolsonaro's is the largest party in Congress
... is not clear if Bolsonaro will recognise his defeat and Lula's victory, he threatened to do a "Trump" and that could lead to violence. Lula promised "fiscal responsibility" which in the context of capitalist crisis means austerity and attacks on the working class....
... a battle has been won, but in order to get fundamental change the struggle needs to continue, in the streets, in the workplaces, in the neighbourhoods and in the schools and universities through strikes and occupations as @EM_CMI pointed out: marxismo.org.br/lula-e-sua-nov…

Far right "libertarian" candidate Milei (56%) has won the presidential run off in Argentina, beating Peronist candidate Massa (44%), the country's outgoing Finance Minister who had renewed a deal with the IMF and promised a government of national unity. Some initial thoughts: 🧵
1/ in 2014 right wing Macri was elected after years of Kirchnerist government (a form of left Peronism) which had benefited from economic stability and high commodity prices. Macri attempted an assault on workers' rights and pensions leading to mass working class opposition
2/ Huge protests against pension counter-reforms in Dec 2017 and then a general strike in Sept 2018. Macri could have been defeated by the mass movement, but TU bureacracy and Peronist politicians managed to channel the anger into electoral field. marxist.com/argentina-para…
Banking shares rapidly falling all over the world this morning, not just the US and not just regional banks, in the aftermath of the collapse of US regional banks. SVB Financial and Signature over the weekend. What caused their collapse and has it got wider implications? 🧵
1/ One of the things which triggered the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank is the sustained rise in interest rates. In the period of ultra-low interest rates (a policy adopted to deal with the 2008 recession), banks borrowed massively through purchase of secure government bonds.
2/ When the Fed started to rise interest rates, the yield on bonds went down forcing SVB to declare a loss. At the same time, SVB was a bank specialising in lending to technology companies. They have taken a hit recently leading to mass lay-offs.
#SignatureBank has been shut down by regulators citing systemic risk. Second US regional bank to close down in a a week, after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Depositors will have ALL money guaranteed, not just the $250,000 covered by Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Biden: "Americans can rest assured that our banking system is safe. Your deposits are safe." Nothing is more certain to make depositors nervous than the President publicly telling they should not be nervous.
San Francisco's First Republic shares lost 65% on Monday, West Bancorp dropped 42%, Western Alliance Bancorp lost more than 70% as regional bank stocks fell sharply. Zions Bancorporation shed 39%, while KeyCorp fell 23%. Bank of America lost 6%, Charles Schwab tumbled 18%.
“Ian Wright and Alan Shearer have pulled out of Match of the Day this weekend in “solidarity” with Gary Lineker after the presenter was told to “step back” from his position”.
Source close to Gary Lineker says he has not agreed to step back from MOTD - claiming the BBC has taken him off air.
It’s understood Lineker is unwilling to apologise for his tweets and admit he should not have posted them.
Head and shoulders above Starmer's Labour in their opposition to the vile Tories. Better than the apologetic Labour left in making a stand and not retreating.
Far right Bolsonaro has been defeated. Lula has won the Brazilian presidential election despite the campaign of dirty tricks, attempts at voter suppression by the state. A few initial observations on the result and what it means: facebook.com/jorge.martin.1…
Bolsonaro still has not conceded defeat. He's expected to make a statement at 1pm local time.
