1/ California's Supt. of Education @TonyThurmond took swift action after our investigation exposed how few schools are equipped to reverse deadly drug overdoses on campus.

Teen overdose deaths in California recently spiked to a nation-wide high.

2/ An overdose antidote, known as Narcan/naloxone, can bring people back to life. It's a nasal spray & the CA legislature first gave schools the power to use it on students 6 years ago. The state even offers Narcan kits for free, but we learned few schools have them on campus.
3/ We surveyed 10 largest school districts in #SanFrancisco Bay Area, home to nearly 500 schools and 320,000 students.
We learned:
- students have suffered overdoses at at least 40% of those school districts
- only 3% high schools have Narcan on campus; 0 middle & elem. schools.
4/ We showed our findings to California Supt. of Education @TonyThurmond. His office immediately contacted each of the school districts we surveyed to encourage them to get naloxone. Thurmond also wrote each of California's 1,000 school districts, urging them to do the same.
5/ Check out our full investigation to find out where your school district lands on the issue, and be sure to take a look at all the digital interactive features we've put together to help explain why this issue is so important.

6/ Also, just 1 day after our story aired, a high school student in San Jose overdosed while on campus. That school is among the few that has naloxone, so principal was able to use it to save the student's life.
My colleague @newsdamian reported on that:

2/ Charges against Depape include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault w/ a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder as well as threats to a public official and their family.

3/ Mr. Pelosi was wearing a "loose-fitting pajama shirt & boxer shorts" when he was forced to get out of bed. He tried to access a phone in his home elevator, but Depape is accused of blocking him. Later, Pelosi asked to use bathroom and was able to call 911 with his cell phone.

🧵 Kate Chatfield, the Chief of Staff for San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, is now blocking credentialed journalists on Twitter.
She has used the social media platform in her capacity as a government official, so it’s unclear what she doesn’t want reporters to see.
1/ Image
Just a few weeks ago, the DA’s office hired a “transparency lawyer” to combat criticism over a perceived lack of transparency. Kate Chatfield herself praised the move, telling SF Standard it “reflects our continued commitment to transparency.”
Now she’s blocking reporters?🤔

When public servants agree to take on the responsibility of doing the people’s work – there must be transparency.

Sure, it’s not convenient nor is it self-serving, but it’s necessary. You deserve it.

After all, it’s your tax dollars paying the salaries of these officials.

1) It’s time to talk about why so much of San Francisco is covered in broken glass.

Car break-ins hit SF at about 3X the rate of Dallas & LA.

19k+ car burglaries reported so far this year.

Some call it the “SF tax,” so why are so many of us paying the price?

2) #WeInvestigate San Francisco’s most frequent crime by questioning the DA & top officials at the police dept.

We also ride along w/ undercover officers to understand why the city seems to be losing the battle against car burglaries.

3) San Francisco Police Sgt. Matt Parra says DA’s Office is too lenient on criminals.

He heads a team of undercover cops tasked w/ tackling car-break-ins in SF’s hardest hit areas. He says 1 out of 2 people his team arrests is someone they’ve recently arrested for similar crimes.

3) So let’s talk about the conspiracy and what former Rohnert Park police officer Brendon Jacy Tatum has confessed to doing.

Several different law enforcement agencies are accused in the scheme.

As one of Tatum’s victims told me, “this is cloak and dagger sh*t.”

#EXCLUSIVE:
1) Two San Francisco prosecutors just quit and tell us they've joined the effort to oust their former boss, District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

In their first tv interviews, they explain why they believe Boudin is making the city more dangerous.
nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san…
2) Before San Francisco prosecutor Brooke Jenkins quit last week, she regularly took on the city's most violent offenders.

She says DA Chesa Boudin frequently gives dangerous criminals a "free pass."

"What he has proven is that his approach is much more radical."

WATCH:
3) Prosecutor Don du Bain says he considers District Attorney Chesa Boudin a friend, but strongly believes he needs to be recalled.

"I've seen decisions made in this office ... since Chesa took over, that shocked my conscience, and I've been a prosecutor for 30 years."

1) When officials at the Oakley Union Elem. School district thought they were meeting privately, they used profanity to insult & threaten parents upset by the district's prolonged school closures.

Here's when they realized their mtg was being broadcast to the public.

"Uh, oh."
2) Before she realized the public was listening in, School Board President Lisa Brizendine criticized parents who continue to be frustrated by the district's Covid-related school closures:

"They want to pick on us because they want their babysitters back."

@nbcbayarea
3) School Board Trustee Richie Masadas then appeared to link parents' frustration over close closures to drug use.

"My brother had a delivery service for medical marijuana and his clientele were parents of kids at school."
