🧵 2/ We were the first today to obtain the video & audio evidence used in the criminal case against David DePape. Now that it's out, let's talk about all that we know regarding that gruesome attack against Paul Pelosi, husband of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
I’m inside the San Francisco courtroom for David DeDape’s preliminary hearing - the man accused of breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and beating her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.
#Here’s what he’s facing:
2/ David DePape is in the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit, with long hair down to his shoulders.
They just played the 911 call made by Paul Pelosi the night of the attack.
1/ San Francisco wants to open “supervised injection sites,” where people can use illegal drugs under care of trained staff.
Goal is reduce overdose deaths, but fed. govt deems sites illegal.
Even at state level, Gov. Newsom vetoed plan to open sites on trial basis. @nbcbayarea2/ What do supervised injection sites look like and how do they work?
They’ve been utilized for decades abroad, so a couple of years ago, we traveled to Vancouver to see the sites for ourselves:

1/ #Scoop: Two major law enforcement agencies investigating #Pelosi attack can't agree on who opened the door once San Francisco police arrived:
Dept. of Justice:
"The 2 officers opened the door..."
SF DA's Office:
"Mr. Pelosi opened the door with his left hand..." @nbcbayarea2/ A source familiar w/ the investigation, who personally watched the police body camera video, tells us SF DA's office got it right, adding that the video shows police knocking the door, then backing away. Door then opens from the inside and you can see Paul Pelosi opening it.

🧵#Exclusive#Scoop 1/ San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins sat down w/ us for a wide-ringing, one-on-one interview, her first since the election.
We spoke about the criticism she's facing, the Paul Pelosi attack, & her plans to end "lawlessness."
Let's break it down. @nbcbayarea2/ Jenkins says as DA, "all crime" is now considered illegal in San Francisco.
She says her predecessor Chesa Boudin (recalled by voters in June) ordered staff not to pursue charges for quality of life crimes (i.e. graffiti), resisting arrest, & certain assaults against cops.

1/ California's Supt. of Education @TonyThurmond took swift action after our investigation exposed how few schools are equipped to reverse deadly drug overdoses on campus.
Teen overdose deaths in California recently spiked to a nation-wide high.
🧵: @EdWriters @nbcbayarea2/ An overdose antidote, known as Narcan/naloxone, can bring people back to life. It's a nasal spray & the CA legislature first gave schools the power to use it on students 6 years ago. The state even offers Narcan kits for free, but we learned few schools have them on campus.

🧵 Kate Chatfield, the Chief of Staff for San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, is now blocking credentialed journalists on Twitter.
She has used the social media platform in her capacity as a government official, so it’s unclear what she doesn’t want reporters to see. 1/
Just a few weeks ago, the DA’s office hired a “transparency lawyer” to combat criticism over a perceived lack of transparency. Kate Chatfield herself praised the move, telling SF Standard it “reflects our continued commitment to transparency.”
Now she’s blocking reporters?🤔 2/

1) It’s time to talk about why so much of San Francisco is covered in broken glass.
Car break-ins hit SF at about 3X the rate of Dallas & LA.
19k+ car burglaries reported so far this year.
Some call it the “SF tax,” so why are so many of us paying the price?

2) #WeInvestigate San Francisco’s most frequent crime by questioning the DA & top officials at the police dept.
We also ride along w/ undercover officers to understand why the city seems to be losing the battle against car burglaries.
After spending months denying any wrongdoing, a police officer in California now admits he was part of a conspiracy to steal drugs/cash from drivers during traffic stops on HWY 101.
This story has plenty of Hollywood-like plot lines & a tangled web of victims, so check out our website to find digital extras that make it easy to follow who is accused of doing what.
#EXCLUSIVE: 1) Two San Francisco prosecutors just quit and tell us they've joined the effort to oust their former boss, District Attorney Chesa Boudin.
In their first tv interviews, they explain why they believe Boudin is making the city more dangerous. nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san…2) Before San Francisco prosecutor Brooke Jenkins quit last week, she regularly took on the city's most violent offenders.
She says DA Chesa Boudin frequently gives dangerous criminals a "free pass."
"What he has proven is that his approach is much more radical."

1) When officials at the Oakley Union Elem. School district thought they were meeting privately, they used profanity to insult & threaten parents upset by the district's prolonged school closures.
Here's when they realized their mtg was being broadcast to the public.
"Uh, oh."
2) Before she realized the public was listening in, School Board President Lisa Brizendine criticized parents who continue to be frustrated by the district's Covid-related school closures:
