THREAD: We have been tracking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ policy promises from his campaign in 2018. Here’s where his promises stand on the environment, teacher salaries, health care costs, and more: politifact.com/florida/promis… Image
When he ran for governor, Ron DeSantis pledged to protect and enhance Florida’s air quality. Although he didn't institute clean air policies immediately, metrics suggest air quality has improved. We rated this promise a Compromise. bit.ly/3FwWhpa
DeSantis said he’d advocate to broaden access to mental health and substance abuse treatment in Florida. He put money behind these initiatives and we rated this promise Kept. bit.ly/3zv4EO7
When Ron DeSantis became Florida’s governor, he focused on raising salaries to fight a persistent #teacher shortage. But #covid19 complicated education and state data shows teacher vacancies have risen since his term started. We rate this promise Stalled. bit.ly/3TQqeoz
DeSantis said he’d make nontraditional health care plans more available to Floridians. Because legislation he enacted opened access to short-term plans and direct physician care agreements, we rate this Promise Kept. bit.ly/3zvMkUV
Gov. Ron DeSantis called building a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee important for Everglades restoration. Work on the project’s stormwater treatment plant is to finish in 2023, but the reservoir is years off. We rate this promise Compromise. bit.ly/3Fx8GsZ
A 2021 law Ron DeSantis pushed will cut Florida’s business rent tax — a levy on commercial lease and license payments — by more than half. But the tax won’t be phased out, as he’d promised as he campaigned for governor. So, we rate this promise Compromise. bit.ly/3U538u8
Before taking office, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he'd urge Florida lawmakers to ban hydraulic fracturing statewide. Although he acted to stop fracking, ensuing efforts to ban it statewide have not passed the Legislature. We rate this promise In the Works. bit.ly/3gYNa6r
When Ron DeSantis ran for governor, he pledged to help stop red tide, harmful algal blooms on Florida’s Gulf Coast. He allocated millions of dollars toward red tide research and passed a bill to curb red tide-worsening factors. We rate this Promise Kept. bit.ly/3NqqgAT
The risk of catastrophic hurricane damage had Ron DeSantis vowing to address rising seas when he ran for governor. In office, he boosted state dollars for resiliency projects, but was less decisive about sustainable growth. We rate this promise Compromise. bit.ly/3SStChj
Ron DeSantis campaigned for governor promising “top 3 status" in reading and math for Florida's schools on @NAEP_NCES and K-12 rankings. In 2020 and ’21, the state was third on @educationweek’s rankings, but not on NAEP’s. We rate this promise Compromise. bit.ly/3TL0OIN
He vowed to diversify Florida’s economy and create more high-paying jobs. Data shows he delivered on his general goals, but it’s hard to link the progress to particular state-level policies. We rate this Promise Kept. bit.ly/3zreiRV
DeSantis said he'd cut taxes on Florida businesses, including the corporate income tax. But a federal law broadened the tax base, tax collections rose and the tax rate, which had dipped, rose. We rate this Promise Broken. bit.ly/3gRcPxD
DeSantis vowed to lower Florida's communication services tax, which adds to cellphone and cable costs. But the state struck proposed cuts to the tax in ’19 and ’20, and the levy's mostly static. We rate this Promise Broken. bit.ly/3SRP9qm
DeSantis pushed for Florida to use E-Verify, an online system, to prevent the hiring of people in the country illegally. Business leaders resisted and he signed a more limited measure into law. We rate this promise Compromise. bit.ly/3Dqg9aB
Ron DeSantis campaigned for governor promising to "expand choice scholarship programs" in Florida. Because more students are enrolled in the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship and because he enacted pro-student-choice policies, we rate this Promise Kept. bit.ly/3zrUAFp

Trump sent a letter to the Jan. 6 committee saying 2020 was “rigged and stolen.” Trump’s own advisers added to the evidence that the election wasn’t stolen, including Attorney General Bill Barr who told Trump his statements were “bull----.”

Trump sent a letter to the Jan. 6 committee saying 2020 was “rigged and stolen.” Trump said even before the election that rigging would be the only way Dems would win. Pants on Fire! politifact.com/factchecks/202…
A conspiracy to rig an election would require thousands of people conspiring across multiple jurisdictions to commit felonies. There’s no evidence it happened. politifact.com/factchecks/202…

New: For decades, the word “grooming” has been associated with child sexual abuse.

Now, it has become used to imply members of the LGBTQ community deliberately prey on children by discussing sexual orientation and gender identity. politifact.com/article/2022/m…
Exposure to these topics “does not change the way people develop,” said the University of Minnesota’s Jenifer McGuire, who studies family relationships and gender identity and the health of transgender youth.
“It changes how they feel about how they develop,” McGuire said. “Accepting parents don’t change whether or not their kid is trans — they change whether or not their kid hates themselves and gets kicked out of the house for being trans. The kid’s transness is there regardless.”

You might have seen a clip of President Joe Biden “shaking hands” with thin air. It never happened. Here’s the truth, as well as how misinformers manufacture and embellish embarrassing presidential moments:
The claim appeared on YouTube and Twitter, shared by Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz. It even appeared on Instagram, where Snoop Dogg shared the video with his followers. instagram.com/p/Ccf63NbFHme/
It even showed up on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, mentioned at the very beginning of the segment after they mentioned Biden’s low approval ratings. Colin Jost sits next to a p...

Yesterday, Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation hearings wrapped up. Here's the fact-checks we've written about it:
Senator Josh Hawley failed to prove that Jackson is more lenient than federal judges on average. Judges regularly give lesser sentences than what the government wants. politifact.com/factchecks/202…
While defending Guantanamo Bay detainees, Jackson did not call either former President George W. Bush or former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "war criminals." politifact.com/factchecks/202…

Social media posts claim that the drug labels for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine "were blank when they should have contained all these diseases and adverse events" listed in a confidential report. They fail to acknowledge several important caveats. bit.ly/3txBnzz
Adverse events are any and all health issues that arise after someone receives a drug, whether or not it's caused by the drug. Not all adverse events that have been reported are included in a drug label because investigation may show they are not related to the drug.
The Pfizer document that’s the source of social media posts is an analysis of adverse event reports collected from December 2020 through the end of February 2021. During this period, the company’s COVID-19 vaccine was under emergency use authorization.

It’s been one year since we watched, along with everyone else, as rioters overran the U.S. Capitol, fueled by misinformation from then-President Donald Trump and a storm of pro-Trump media. politifact.com/article/2022/j… #January6th #Jan6thCommittee
We’ve spent the past year examining the events of Jan. 6, debunking false claims of election fraud in 2020, and trying to understand how misinformation — much of it spread online — spurred such real-life consequences. Here are some highlights:
As Jan. 6 unfolded, we tracked many claims about election results and who was to blame for the Capitol siege. Here’s our coverage and debunking from Jan. 6: politifact.com/article/2021/j…
