'Dealing with modern illiberal democracies: From vintage electoral autocracy to today’s jumble of populism with nativism'.

"Democratic illiberalism is no other than populism... it bespeaks a conception of democracy that is openly hostile to liberal principles" - Pappas.
Liberal politicians accept that the diversity of modern society – ideological or otherwise – should be protected through the rule of law. Illiberal politicians claim society is divided between 'ordinary people' & an 'establishment', a division they play up for electoral reasons.
Populists make the bullshit claim that only they truly represent the (will of the) people, & that their political competitors are all part of an immoral & corrupt elite. Whoever does not support the populist agenda therefore does not belong to the real people to begin with.
Since illiberal-populist politicians claim to exclusively represent the people, they often “dismiss minorities & disregard institutional legality, while favouring majoritarianism”. Such illiberal instincts reside within all Europe’s populist movements.
Pappas claims populist democratic illiberalism is frequently confused with nativism, a quite distinct political phenomenon. Unlike populism, which can be found on the left & right, nativism is more closely aligned to the right-wing conservative “law & order” agenda.
Nativism also embraces “welfare chauvinism”, in which a classically left wing agenda – generous social security benefits – is tied to a nativist theme by severely restricting access to these on the basis of (ethnic) nationality.
Although both offer their particular challenges to liberal democracy, nativist politicians are generally more committed to parliamentary democracy & constitutional legality than their populist counterparts.
Because of this Pappas is more concerned about the “contagious quality” of populism than about the rhetoric of nativism. Populism attacks the legitimacy of the institutions from which democracy operates & tempts other political parties to adopt populist positions of their own.

'Framing' migrants.

“(Media) frames are persistent patterns of cognition, interpretation, and presentation, of selection, emphasis, and exclusion, by which symbol-handlers routinely organize discourse.” Gitlin.

tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
Entman specified that frames fulfil four functions: they (a) define situations or events as un/problematic, (b) identify causal conditions or responsible actors, & (c) make moral judgments of these circumstances, thereby (d) justifying & endorsing specific courses of action. ImageImage
Since problem definitions, causal interpretations, and moralization serve to legitimize and rationalize certain policies (Edelman), frames resonate to varying degrees with different ideologies. Right-wing media rarely frames migration in a positive light. ImageImage

In 2019, Nigel Farage enjoyed a fundraiser for Turning Point UK with right-wingers who have spread racist & conspiracist material online, sharing a table with millionaire John Mappin — who has shared anti-vax conspiracies & disinformation about Soros.

politico.eu/article/nigel-…
Recordings of the Ritz tea party were posted by another guest, John Mappin, a pro-Kremlin cheerleader who has repeatedly posted about conspiracy theories — including about vaccines & the widely debunked paedophile conspiracy known as QAnon.
Mappin, a Scientologist, was quoted by the Mail on Sunday as saying “being friends with Putin is very smart. We love him.” He also questioned the UK government’s account of the Salisbury Novichok attack, echoing a Kremlin talking point.

#BREAKING: The Liberal Democrats are calling for an independent Cabinet Office inquiry into the the report that Sir Gavin Williamson told an official to “slit your throat” and to jump out of a window when he was defence secretary.
Christine Jardine: "@Conservatives must not be allowed to mark their own homework. We need an independent inquiry now to address these damning allegations. Anything less would be an abdication of leadership from No 10 & make a mockery of Sunak’s promise to govern with integrity."
In response, Williamson issued a statement saying:

"I strongly reject this allegation (if bullying) & have enjoyed good working relationships with the many brilliant officials I have worked with across government. No specific allegations have ever been brought to my attention."

'Destructive storytelling: disinformation and the Eurosceptic myth that shaped Brexit', by Imke Henkel’

Book review, by Wenjuan Zhou.

…w-tandfonline-com.hallam.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.10…
Narratives as potential resources for enriching critical discourse studies can promise critical discourse analysts three ways of storytelling as an approach; epistemological work; rational work, & political work; & two types of stories: 'action tales' & 'carrier bag stories'.
Imke Henkel’s latest monograph seems to fall into appropriately the political work on the action tale of Brexit referendum, drawing on Roland Barthes’ concept of myth as a depoliticized speech of ideology & Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional analytical framework.

‘It's OK to be white’: the discursive construction of victimhood, ‘anti-white racism’ & calculated ambivalence in Australia.

This paper critically examines the 2018 ‘It's OK to be White’ Senate motion by Australian far-right politician Pauline Hanson.

tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…
The ‘It's OK to be white’ slogan was designed by online white supremacist groups with the intention of ‘triggering liberals’ & provoking outrage.

Hanson's motion was an act of calculated ambivalence, which served to address multiple audiences simultaneously.
The motion provided Hanson with a novel way to discuss so-called ‘anti-white’ or ‘reverse’ racism which generated the desired controversy & media attention, exposing the Australian media's illiteracy on contemporary alt-right/white supremacist tactics & discourses.

Your personal data is more valuable than oil for a reason.

'With great power comes great responsibility.'
In 1817, British MP William Lamb proclaimed: "the possession of great power necessarily implies great responsibility" during debate over the suspension of habeas corpus amid the rioting & disorder of the economic crisis & poor harvests following the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
Relating Lamb's speech, Hansard retold his argument that "his friends would, perhaps reproach him with instigating ministers to curb the press; but nothing, he assured them, was farther from his mind.
