A while ago I met a famous person I’d been following on twitter. I genuinely loved their work. I said I followed them on Twitter & my online tweets were mostly trans & mob focused. ‘I don’t like what they do to kids’ was what came out of their mouth. The end.

#TransAwarenessWeek
The end of engagement, the end of loving their work, the end of assuming because someone seems kind that they aren’t judgemental. It was the end. The media could help to make our lives better, to help us spread the word. @abcnews and @SBSNews could do that.
#TransAwarenessWeek
I know it sounds terrible, but I hoped they’d learn. I said something, as you’d imagine, but they didn’t understand. They were committed to their misinformation. Persuading people that #TransRightsAreHumanRights is harder than it should be. Media could help. @abcnews @SBSNews
Anyone who’s had a conversation with me when I’m angry about injustice knows I’m no wilting flower. But here, I experienced the shock of being faced with a cold hard reality that we are unwelcome in someone else’s world, that our existence is wrong.#TransRightsAreHumanRights
Like many interactions we have as trans folk, there can be a fear of rejection or ridicule in engaging w/people you’ve never met or worked with. Recently I contacted someone cos they’d accidentally misgendered someone in a public setting. Their response was wonderful;magnanimous.
Sorry, just to be clear I don’t normally contact people when they misgender someone. It’s just that they had done it in a recording and I thought they might have been able to clip it or change it, which they did actually. But again, it’s good people we’re talking about here.
I don’t think there’d be an Aboriginal person doesn’t know this feeling too. Because prejudice is prejudice. People trying to find a way to negotiate your humanity before your very eyes is… a lot. So it can make you nervous & defensive, and for many of us that’s how it is.
This was the fear I had when I started to talk about being trans and affirmed in my gender. On one hand I was happier and more at ease than I’ve been in my life, but I was also really worried that I’d lose friends, the respect of others (I know) and community. Mostly I didn’t.
The irony is that my gender, even before I started to affirm or talk about it, had always been a barrier for me. It had an impact on getting jobs, for instance. I’d been told point-blank by one white boss that other Aboriginal ppl would be put off by how I dressed. It wasn’t true.
The one thing I know now at this end of my life and career is that in your personal or public life, you can’t negotiate with people who hold prejudice against you. You can’t negotiate their reaction or their respect.

Sorry all... England just woke up, and so unfortunately did the transphobia. Please ignore the comments... these people wouldn't know compassion if it colonised their own country.

Sorry all...England just woke up, so unfortunately did the transphobia. Ignore comments across my timeline while they have their tea & crumpets & tutut about the ppl they couldn't control. They wouldn't know compassion if it colonised their own country. #TransRightsAreHumanRights
If you feel like going over to that particular thread though, that would be welcomed. It's like playing whack-a-mole over there.
Now would be the time for that famous ally ship during #TransAwarenessWeek

There's a way to go to ensure that trans mob are included in our community resourcing. Acknowledging that men are men and women are women, regardless of whether cis or trans is one thing. Also supporting access by non-binary mob.

@IndigFutures Without question, as Aboriginal people we understand, but the way funding and conservatism in our resourcing has been managed has challenged inclusion and support. I keep coming back to this remarkable report from Dr @Percy_ixi et al that *included*.

If they can do it there, why can't we? For this & for other areas of support. If you're trans mob thinking about this, or mob who're not sure how to, can you get in touch with me (here or on sandy.osullivan@mq.edu.au). I don't have answers, but I have some ideas. @IndigFutures

🧵When you hear #TransRightsAreHumanRights, this #TransAwarenessWeek (or any other time), what we mean is many of us don't have the same rights and opportunities as cis folks.

A ranty questioning thread that requires you to do some homework.
I don't expect to live a long life, but I'm more angry I will be misgendered on my death cos of restrictions in the state I live in/was born in/work in. Self-ID matters and not just in binary genders. Do you know what could change with self-ID? Report back.

#TransAwarenessWeek
Trans people are old, young, Indigenous, settler etc. What we share is we're not the gender we were assigned at birth. Some cis folks can't bear this, they need to control our lives & bodies. Cos of this, smaller meaningful changes are blocked, like self-ID.

On this #TransAwarenessWeek let’s celebrate ourselves as trans people. What would you tell your younger self about how things turned out for you so far?
I'd probably tell my younger self that - longer or shorter - my haircut hasn't appreciably changed in 35 years.

(Self, if you like) ID: Me, at 21... nearly working out how to smile for the camera. 21 year old looking at camera.
I would NOT tell my 15 year old self that I'm a professor at a university, cos their dream lay elsewhere, but also they probably would've said 'did you have to read a lot of books for that?' 15 year old Aboriginal kid playing a banjo, staring at the c

As transgender people we didn't arrive as fully formed adults - once we were kids. Let’s show when we were little trans kids!

I've just realised that I will be in Melbourne for the #TransDayOfRemembrance vigil next Sunday - so I'm registered to go! I'll be solo, so I hope to see folks there to attend vigil with. I've missed vigil the last few years, so it'll be good to be there to bear witness.
