the west: it isn’t. The people fighting for freedom in Iran are real people and I’m scoffing as I’m typing this bc it shows how disconnected folks can be from grassroots & how the only reflection of what’s happening in Iran they see or get is the one that’s mainstream
The mvt is grassroots, it’s women, queer, men, youth, working class and throughout. To diminish #WomenLifeFreedom to “it’s imperialist & US backed” bc the argument is, “that’s how it always been”, is erasing all the above. It’s ignoring people’s intimate stories
of struggle & resistance. It’s ignoring #Kurdistan #SistanBuchestan #Sharif_University and so many other moments of a movement made 1st of people: that’s what grassroots means. now ofc the narrow politicized nature of the iranian diaspora is what it is
like many diaspora, like for many struggles for change, people’s narratives will exist in larger complex contexts. But again: this is the people. And the people is vast, not monolith, the people is diverse not one shade, the people is layered not one line of political thought
Some folks may hold political views your disagree with and that support a monarchy, but that’s their right, just like others may share the same views as you, a democratic state, multiparty, whatever that is. & whatever it is, nothing can trump m the people’s uprising vs power
Listen to the people in Iran with radical empathy, and support with radical love in the ways you can. Don’t underestimate the intelligence of this movement from Iran and the political conclusions that will inevitably be born out of it BY the people IN #Iran when the time comes
Which brings me to the ones who say “but what if it’s another war”, no one wants another war, ppl want freedom, choice, a life, and they want it through means and ways they are showing us, so be also aware of the limitations of your “expertise”, and focus rather on your empathy
