Spent the evening with my sister packing up The Wife's medical supplies for donation. My scientist niece found us a place that can use them that would also make The Wife happy--American Ukrainian Relief Association.
1/🧵
#TheWife
The surgical supply place wouldn't take them back and credit her account. They weren't covered by her health insurance because apparently having a tracheostomy is a whimsical thing. So now, hundreds of dollars of supplies will get used by people who need them. What a relief.
2/🧵
I needed to get the medicalization out of here. The Wife hated it every second. She hated the trach, hated the complications, hated all that was entailed in the daily care. It was torture the last week of her life. She was so brave. I miss her bravery. I miss all of her.
3/🧵
We really have to do better for sick people in America. I have no idea how The Wife would have managed without my help. I'm not sure how I will manage without her help. We were just one couple. 1.9M people will have been dxd with #cancer in 2022. How are they all managing?
4/🧵
39.5% of Americans will be diagnosed with #cancer in their lifetimes. I've had cancer, both my parents died of cancer, my best friend had cancer, two previous partners died of cancer before they were 50. And now my beloved wife. Why aren't we doing more about this??
5/🧵
Think about how 39.5% of Americans is 132.8 MILLION people. When I'd write about The Wife's #cancer journey, the threads were filled with folks with cancer or who had loved ones with cancer. WTH--why aren't we fixing this? So many new and rare cancers, too. Like The Wife's.
6/🧵
As a reporter, I try to make sense of trauma by getting to the bottom of the story. Why wasn't there a test to find The Wife's #cancer? Why is so much cancer found in later stages, like hers? Why are there so many environmental cancers? Why so many kids with cancer?
7/🧵
I did this investigation after a close friend died of lung cancer. Not one thing has changed in the couple years since I wrote this. WHY NOT?

The Deadliest Cancer for Women Is Not the One You Think
damemagazine.com/2018/12/03/the…
And when are we going to do something about the survival gaps between #cancer in Black and brown people and white people? We don't even talk about this. I've been writing about it literally since the 1990s and no changes. Why (IYKYK)?
9/🧵
Black people have the highest death rate/shortest survival of any racial/ethnic group wrt #cancer. Black♀️ are 41% more likely to die of breast cancer than ◻️ women even though their incidence is lower. I can't make sense of The Wife's death. But I can fight for others.

Navigating widowhood --what a peculiar 19th century word--is itself shocking. I reached out to a widow and a widower I know from us following each other on here. Both famous, both incredibly generous with their counsel, each trying to keep me from being pulled under.
1/🧵
Grief is an undertow. She should be in the bed next to me. She shouldn't have left me. She promised she'd beat this. I promised I'd protect her. I said I'd take care of her, that I wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. But if I'd protected her, wouldn't she still be here?
2/🧵
The foxes have been calling every night since The Wife left me. Deep and mournful, a plaintive question for which there is no answer. Why:? Why did this happen to us and all the other us-es to whom it has happened? Why haven't we found a way to stop this disease yet?

This poem by W.S. Merwin is the perfect evocation of what happens when one loses a spouse–the missing piece leaves you riven. There is nothing that one doesn’t want to share with that person who was supposed to be there, always. Solidarity to all who are grieving.
1/🧵
All the daily things The WIfe and I did together–the quotidian daily things. How much would I give to do those chores with her again. All of it. For even one more day. I shall love you and miss you and long for you always. Until we meet again, my sweet darling girl. xxx

Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its color.” –W.S. Merwin

#BREAKING_NEWS: #TheWife
It is with heavy heart and incalculable grief that I announce the sudden and too-soon death of my beloved and adored wife, Maddy, who I always called The Wife here. It’s impossible to articulate the depth of my pain at the loss of her. I am riven.
1/🧵
Many of you followed The Wife's cancer journey here. Your messages of support and love, your prayers and messages of healing I read to her and she loved y'all for your kindness to her, to me, to us. I am meeting with the funeral director at 3pm, but I wanted to let you know.
2/🧵
I will post an obit and a condolence page once the notice is up on the funeral home website. But for now, thank you for all your support and kindness. I shall need more of that going forward. Maddy was the love of my life and we were bonded deeply and forever.

In his speech, Biden struck a balance between cautious optimism and laying out what his agenda is for the next two years to help the American people. No doubt this enraged GOP leadership, but this is what he ran to do: move the US forward.
Biden also said he wants to continue to build the economy "from the bottom up & the middle out."That's how you get people out of poverty,he said. He also said he will not compromise on abortion rights or Social Security. He was succinct. Nor will he compromise on Climate Crisis.
Biden also applauded young voters who "voted in historic numbers" and singled out Florida's Frost who is the youngest person elected to the House and noted how young he was when he was ejected senator at 29. He said America wants compromise, not extremes.

Some folks I know on here who I like a lot were already paying Twitter monthly pre-Musk for Twitter Blue or to be Super Follows. I'm living at the poverty level, so I was not doing either.
🧵
Pre-Musk, I would not have been opposed to paying $8 a month to maintain my connections on here in what for me has been a truly amazing experience of connecting with other writers, journalists and activists globally. 🧵
I'll stay on here for the duration. Almost no one I know has left and nearly all big accounts I follow have stated that they are staying. The activist voices of women, BIPOC and LGBTQ are so important to me & Twitter has been a space for historically marginalized communities.

Lois Curtis has died.

May the remarkable disability rights activist Lois Curtis, who altered the lives of millions, rest in peace and power and may all of us who loved her, and are so grateful for her, hold her memory to us as a blessing. 🕊️

npr.org/2022/11/05/113…
It is impossible to fully articulate the import Lois Curtis had on the disability community. Her pleas to attorneys to be taken out of the institutions she spent her teens and 20s warehoused in as a person with intellectual disabilities finally resulted in landmark legislation.
Sue Jamieson fought for Lois Curtis to live in community. As a consequence of the lawsuit Jamieson filed on behalf of Lois, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the ruling that gave us the Olmstead Act in 1999 which said people with disabilities could not be segregated from society.
