#KerbalSpaceProgram has taught me to appreciate what a huge achievement @NASA getting to the moon was. You think you know. You go "Yeah, it's the moon, we went a bunch of times. We played golf on the moon. So what?"
But you don't.
So in this game I have sandbox mode on, which means I don't have to worry about any extras. I can just play with all the toys because that is what I really want to do. Don't have to worry about funding or research. Just space.
Also, the game allows me to let my kerbals take the wheel and fly while I focus on the mission at hand. It gives me a map with a little blue line to follow. It calculates the movement and vector that I need to follow to do the things that I need.
Because contrary to popular belief you can't just shoot a rocket at the moon. You have to get into orbit around earth. You have to use the earth to help you jettison into the moons orbital path to meet up with it, a moving object, and then get in the moons orbit.
Then you have to slow down enough that you aren't going to just smack into the surface, and gently land so nothing breaks.
And then you have to do that all in reverse, with less fuel. And it's hard. I'm still trying to get there. I can now get to orbit the moon.
But here is the thing... I have computer course correction. I don't have to worry about being able to afford enough fuel. I don't have to worry about food, or bodily waste, or politics, space junk, or anything else. I have a map that lays everything out.
I have a little blue line to follow.
No one had that on the first mission. The phone I'm typing this out on had more processing power than the computer we took to the moon. The computer I am playing this on has way more processing power to get someone to the moon.
The Apollo 11 astronauts had math, and a prayer. And if one thing went wrong that was it, they were dead. They either floated out into space escaping the moons orbit with no way to reach them. Or they died in a fiery crash on the moon.
Or everything was fine until they landed and realized they ate too much fuel, or they broke something that couldn't be fixed and were left to die there.
And then there was the return trip. It was math and eyeballing it. And that had to be terrifying. The. They had to go back.
I suck at math. One number wrong somewhere and I've killed everyone in some way and we won't know until it is too late to do anything about it.
And that's without Congress to threaten to slash our budget, or pundits asking why we need to send things into space.
Or worrying that somewhere, out there, is a kid who is about to watch their parent die on national TV. Or that I'm about to send a friend to their death.
Just math and a calculator and a prayer. It's humbling. That took guts. So yeah, I have no complaints about space.
I've got no more questions about why a human hasn't been to Mars yet. It's a lot. Even with the advances in tech, it's a lot.
And those folks going to Mars? There is no guarantee of reaching there, or coming back.
It's just wild, y'all

So abortion is healthcare and a human right no matter the reason. I wanted to highlight this. TW: Miscarriage, Forced Birth, Loss of reproductive ability
This woman almost lost her life because she didn't have access to an abortion. She miscarried. Her water broke at 14 weeks, and the doctors told her she will develop a life threatening infection, but because Texas is so vague with it's fucking law they couldn't provide abortion.
There was no saving the child. They were dead. They begged the doctors. There was nothing that they could do to save this wanted pregnancy.
So she went home.
And she developed an infection and was sent to the E.R. her fever spiked to 104 and they finally got the abortion.
Gen X: You know, it kind of sucks out here. It would be great if it sucked a little bit less.
Boomers: You are Lazy and Entitled and too young to make a difference. You want college for free, go serve in operation desert storm and get some boot straps to pull your self up with
Millennials: Wow, things are even more fucked up than they were for our Gen X. Can we get universal healthcare and college
Boomers: YOU ARE LAZY AND ENTITLED. You want healthcare and college? Go fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm going to go spend your inheritance on bingo
Gen Z: So our schools are a war zone, the planet is dying, and healthcare cost-
Boomers: You are Lazy and -
Gen Z: Listen here, you willfully ignorant old fascist, I'm not asking you, I'm fucking telling you. We are making this world a better place.
TW: Cancer, Religious Images, Blood, Death, Implied childhood terminal illness.
Frank sat staring down at his Tomato Soup and grilled cheese. Technically he wasn't supposed to have anything red prior to the test, and he probably wasn't going to now. It was his comfort food as a kid and sounded amazing on paper, but when the smell hit him....
Hell, even if the smell didn't bother him, he wouldn't have been able to eat more than a few bites anyway. A combination of nerves... And possible stomach cancer. He had all the signs, and there were some masses found with the scans they did.
I feel like all #neurodivergent people came out of the pandemic with no ability to mask anymore, no desire to, and if someone asks us to mask we just look at them like, "I'm sorry, am I living in an 1880s opera house terrorizing folks? No? Well then we shan't be masking"
Hey, so I could have chosen better language for this post. I mean neurotypical masking. Masking behaviors that would out us as ADHD or Autistic.
I still support the wearing of physical masks to protect others. If you are an antimasker, go fuck yourself.
Also, vaccinate you, vaccinate your kids and if they come out with vaccinations for your pets vaccinate them too.
Most of your forgotten realms folks are terrified of orcs because they've only met orc raiding parties. They don't get that orcs are fucking fantastic navigators and sailors.
They don't see how Uber clean and fashion forward orcs are. They don't see how the women of the orc clans have the most power in relationships. They don't see how whole villages help raise children. They don't see the beautiful, intricate carvings and art of the halls and temples
What they have seen of the orcs, and this is how the orcs like it, are the orcs they have fought - their terrifying berserkers. Everything from their tusks, to their green painted skin, to how they dress for combat are all designed to provoke fear in highly trained knights.
