Let's look at the rights of children. In BC I don't see how we are protecting them or following the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child when it comes to their health and safety. 1/11🧵
The special set of rights for children and young people (18 and younger) is called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). On November 20th, 1989 the UNCRC was unanimously adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
2/11
Almost every country of the world eagerly ratified it throughout the next decade and it has become the most widely ratified human rights document in the world.
3/11
Canada played a leading role in its development and ratified the Convention in 1991. Once countries ratify the convention they are legally bound to what it says.
4/11
They are obliged to review their domestic laws and practices regarding children and to make any changes needed to reach the minimum standards set by the Convention.
5/11
I'm not a lawyer but I implore BC to ask themselves how we are protecting our children.
We are their voice. We are their protectors and advocates.
IMO we are trampling on #2 & #3 of the guiding principles of the Convention in the last tweet.

We are all "duty bearers" to children. Are we bearing any duty in BC?
👫 - children aren't being protected from a virus that can disable, damage and kill them in their schools & daycares.
👫 - children aren't being given timely medical care.
9/11
Is our apathy for all things Covid lulling us into a complacency where we are accepting this for our children?
Please say no.🤞
Once it came down to harming our children I thought we would put our collective foot down and fight.

We now know better.
Let's now demand better BC.
Please .....💔👫
Let's talk about the quiet parts out loud.
This is my account of what's been happening to children & families since September.
Keep in mind this is just my family but I think this story is happening in many BC families.
1/11🧵
Family #1 - 2 parents, a 4 and 2 yr old. Dad and Mom both work union jobs with excellent benefits. Kids and parents constantly sick, going to GP, urgent care, and virtual appointments. Lots of prescriptions needed. Both parents have no sick days left.
2/11
Mom is a CEV Teacher who couldn't get a Flu Shot until last week, even though she's on biological immunosuppressants.
Her husband and children so far can't get an appointment for Flu Shots.

I had the opportunity to chat with 2 BC Doctor's last night. One an ER Doc the other an Internal Medicine Doc. Both young and respected in their fields. First point, I was masked, they weren't. #bccovid19 🧵
This was just a social conversation and of course anecdotal but to me terrifying and enlightening. They both think #bonniehenry is amazing and doing an excellent job. They both spoke of Covid in the past tense.
As they seemed to minimize Covid I asked them their thoughts on Long Covid. One said it really doesn't excist. The other said BC is closing Long Covid units as there is no treatment for it and it's a waste of limited HC resources.
Of love and loss. I think most people have experienced the death of someone in their circle. For some it's outer circle people, it effects them, but it doesn't permeate their soul. They express condolences and move on. Death is part of life.
🧵
For others it is someone in their inner circle. Someone who is an integral part of their life. Someone they can't imagine life without. No loss should be discounted but these losses change the fabric of one's being for eternity. You don't move past them.
Many feel helpless and wish they could have done something to prevent this horrific pain. They'd do anything to bring back their person. Often the "what ifs" and "I wish I'd of" runs through their heads like a never ending loop.
