It must be said unequivocally that the Safety of #Women is ultimately that of the State, Culture, Society, Family and Self and in that order.
The unfortunate death of Shraddha is ultimately on the State & Society. This failure is ours.
+
This failure was at multiple levels.
At one level, perpetrators dont fear the State. They dont fear the Police. They fear the Society the least.
The State has taken the agency away from the Society and People. Has made intervention very difficult.
+
In addition, Modernity has pushed Nuclear-Family so much that families are cutoff from their communities and have to deal with their crisis all alone.
This has also made it others to less intervene or not even recognize others problems.
+
In addition, there are very very specific problems we need to deal with.
Sexuality begins to develop strongly by 16. From then on till the marriage age - young men and women are on their own.
Given Modern contexts - We have not evolved culturally acceptable solutions yet.
+
Naturally, this makes boys and girls very vulnerable. Obviously, girls are more vulnerable. It is impossible for all boys and girls to have the same level of clarity, maturity, ability to deal with their energies. Neither can this be expected from all families uniformly.
+
And this is not a school education problem. Those who think a positive education solves the problem are living in their own La-La Land. Statistics are worse in other countries.
This problem is about our ability to create a new society for the next context.
+
State cannot take away the agency of the Society to shape this space. Society at the same time cannot try to solve this problem by curbing freedom of men and women.
Fundamentally, this requires a reconfiguration of the Society itself.
+
But beyond all this, we have to reclaim our space to place very severe costs for erring men & erring societies/communities. That fear has to be brought back.
Boys/Communities indulging this must face such severe costs from the larger Society/State that they dread indulging.
+
In particular, any Shraddha blaming or Family blaming is completely wrong and below the belt.
This kind of a thing happens in love-marriages, arranged marriages everywhere. Once you get into a abusive marriage/relationship many find it difficult to come out. Men face it too.
+
Dharampal-ji in one of his books writes that there were States in pre-British India where the Kotwal Office had to compensate if any theft happened and Kotwal could not catch the thief.
That is the mindset that we need to have especially when it comes to Women safety.
+
Applauding Gujarat again.
Greater degree of freedom for women, Reconfigured yet Traditional society, Appreciative men, high concern for women safety, zero tolerance for any -ve indulgence.
Communities are so vigilant that Aftabs dont dare that easily.
+
If all of society develops that level of intolerance against such sexual crimes - State will also be forced to up its ante. We have withdrawn into our shells and that is reflecting everywhere.
Somewhere we aren’t giving sufficient confidence to girls that they can push back.
+
In the Tamil classic Silappadikkaram, the Pandyan King just gives up his life when he realises he has punished an innocent man.
That was his level of intolerance for his own indulgence in Adharma. That is the level of intolerance for crime against women in general.
+
So, we have to figure out what are those new systems we have to evolve, in the absence of old community systems, that bring back a higher order protection for women - irrespective of whether they make right choices or not.
+
We have become too lazy to think of social systems and solutions. We need to get that back into our thought processes.
Just too many irresponsible statements in the last one week - forced me to pen a slightly activistic thread, which otherwise I am not inclined to.

Recent posts on Twitter on Dr. Vasudeva Sharan Agrawalla has filled me with concern about our engagement with the past.
A Civilization distinguishes itself in
- Thought, Concepts in evolves
- Translating that into material life.
+
Thought simply does not accumulate. It flows, evolves, morphs into something else. Every generation passes its Past into the Future in two ways
- Pure Conceptual Unchanging Thought
- How it applied to specific times and how it can flow into the Future
Its a Relay.
+
Consequently, engaging with our immediate ancestral generations and their thought is very crucial to how we take things forward in in our times and pass it onto the future.
In this, the world of Kannada is lucky. This continuous flow of Thought is not seriously disturbed.
The State appreciates Artha & Kama only.
- Highly places its own Artha
- Not aware of its own Kama
- Places Artha-Kama of the Society as subservient to its own
- Does not recognize Moksha (Daiva)
- Appreciates Dharma only as Law & Order
