Arittapatti (also called as Pancha Pandava Padukkai) is a village set near a rocky hill in Melur block, about 25kms northeast of Madurai, #Tamilnadu. It has one of the oldest known Tamil Brahmi inscriptions dating back to the 2nd century BCE in Kalinjamalai, Arittapatti.

The inscriptions indicates 2 persons - Nelvazhi Sizhivan & Ilanji Imayavan had given shelter to the Jain monks at this cave Near the cave, a sculpture of an ancient Jain Tirthankar is found.

There are 52 waterbodies found in this village, which were used both for drinking and irrigation purposes. This village nurtures biodiversity and many rare bird species can be spotted here.

An inscription belonging to Sadayavarman Vikaramapandiyan period is found at another Shiva temple that says around 700yrs back Arittapatti had been an important trading city. An 8th century rock cut temple at Arittapatti is the oldest known Lakulisha iconography in #Tamilnadu

A 10th century CE vattezhuthu inscription found under the sculpture says that Kalinjamalai was earlier called as 'Thiruppinaiyanmalai'.
