Creating paid ads for your game can feel scary.

It is a skill you can learn, but every skill needs training.

Here are some thoughts, if you want to start into it:

🧵👇

#gamedev #indiedev
If you consider a game as an interdisciplinary medium.

Through your game you're constantly communicating with your players.

What does your game "say" to them through the images, mechanics and things that happen inside?

Go There?
Do That?
Kill This?
Usually it's more than that.
Basically, it's about the *message* you send out and whether it gets through to someone.

The clearer the message, the easier it's received and understood.

Here's an analogy that will help you not only with paid ads, but with any type of communication.
If you imagine your *message* as a spear and yourself as the one who "throws" the spear.

Your goal is that the spear hits the target "to be understood by person X".

In javelin throwing, there are many factors that can deflect your aim.
Your task is to....
Make sure that the spear hits the "target".

Some of these factors can be the wind, the spear itself, your physique...

Sometimes these factors are beyond your control.

A 100% hit rate isn't always possible.
What you want to do is aim as well as you can and have a technique before you throw the spear.

So that you do your best, but accept that sometimes you won't hit it, no matter how good you're.

When it comes to communication, you can apply this analogy as follows:
There are different methods of communication, one rather famous model is the "4 Sides of communication".

You've one sender and one receiver.

Depending on how you send something, it can be received differently

And what does that have to do with paid advertising?...👇 ImageImage
If you see paid advertising as a way to talk to a potential player about your game.

Then it only depends on what you tell them that's interesting enough for them to download, buy or play your game.

Sometimes you need to practice throwing a spear ... or writing an ad.
It all boils down to practice, you can't expect to be a master spear thrower after a single throw.

Theoretically, you can learn how to write ads with an investment of €1 or $1 a day.

It's not much, but it can already help you understand what it's all about.
If you're still relatively early in your career as a game developer, writing ads can be scary.

It doesn't have to be that way.

It's something to get into once you have a deeper understanding of the "what" and "why" of your game.
If you are stuck in your game development and don't know how to move your idea to financial success.

Then I am happy to help you out.

If you have even written one line of code for your game, then you are already ahead of all the people, who only dream and never start.

Celebrating all the small accomplishments can be so meaningful.

It really can boost your motivation.
This is how I do it👇
At first it may feel a bit weird. Because for each and everyone of us an accomplishment can be something else.

For some, just getting out of the bed or making the bed in the morning is already a big win.

That's okay.

That's as much a win than any other.
If it was difficult for *you* then it's worth celebrating.

A day is already "won" when you are achieving 1% more than the day before.

In the span of a year, it is still lots of improvement.

Even if you are not making progress for one or two days or even a week.

Really humbled by Julio making this amazing testimonial of our call. 🥰

Julio is creating a Street Fighter, please check it out!

I myself was always a huge fan of Soulcalibur (played it way too much, when I was young).

So I am really looking forward to what Julio is creating!
If you are interested in supporting Julio's idea, you can already wishlish Resistance204x on Steam:

I am sure he would be very happy about your support. 🥰
Also here is me at an event in Berlin.. playing Street Fighter on a cinema screen. 😎

(Great fun, but comes at the price of slight neckpain.) ImageImageImage

Not sure how to promote your game?

Maybe you have not heard of a press kit yet?

If you did... keep scrolling! 😂👍

IF NOT:
Here is what it is and why it's nice to have one!

[Thread]🧵✨👇

You want to communicate important facts to the media and journalists, and you can do that with a press kit.

Gaming has changed so much in recent years that the importance of creating hype and having a solid media strategy has increased.
What's a presskit?✨

- A promotional tool for your game.
- Usually a one-page document
- Includes contacts, details, events, products & promotions
- Interesting to journalists or people who may cover your game or company

✨How to delegate tasks: ✨

- Chose the right person
- Explain why you are delegating
- Provide instructions
- Provide resources and training
- Delegate responsibility and authority
- Provide feedback
- Stay humble & say "thank you" 🥰

[Thread]🧵👇

#gamedev #indiedev
💖I know it's scary to delegate, so here are the pros:

- Boosts and improves employer reputation
- Increases productivity
- Makes succession planning easier
- Less prone to burnout as you're no longer the bottleneck.
Why can delegating be so difficult? 😞

Because it feels like a loss of control.

It isn't easy to trust others to do a task as well as you know you could.
Discovering errors may cause you to overreact.

It's normal that they are less good, that's why you are the lead, not them.

"I'm not an art director, sorry for the bad feedback!"

If you're a game developer and have an artist with you, but don't know how to share your thoughts, I've prepared a little guide to help you out!

Thread below👇🧵

#gamedev #indiedev
Throughout my career, I've helped both small and mid-sized indie teams develop their artistic vision for their game.

Often there's no creative director to help artists figure out if they're on the right track.

This can lead to a lot of back and forth and frustration.
The system I'm going to share with you is the way I gave feedback to my last art team as Art Lead and creative vision-keeper.

It is structured as following:

1. Introduction
2. Context
3. Content
4. Formal Elements
5. Process
6. Mood
7. Connections
