“We do not know our history” - Thabo Mbeki South African President 1999-2008 speech on #AfricaRising on the anniversary of the defeat of European colonial Ambition at Adwa by Ethiopia led by Emperor Menilik II.
Thabo Mbeki celebrates 120 years of ADWA
Also covers (at the end) the liberation of Haiti in a slave uprising at the end of the 18th C. And the 1990s end of Apartheid South Africa.
I reflect that in some ways the repercussions of the two African victories over great western powers are not yet fully resolved.
That said, hopefully lasting freedom and independence of Ethiopia has been once more - and this time finally - settled in this latest war against a Western Proxy attacks. It is long past time for relations between Africa and European Power to realign as a partnership of equals.
Finally, it struck me listening to Mbeki talking about Menelik, that the use by TPLF of Menelik as a wedge to divide Oromo and Amhara peoples is perhaps not only related to their their objective to divide and destabilise Ethiopia.
I found myself wondering if this character assassination of Menelik II may have also been a nod and a wink to TPLF’s Western power enablers and paymasters, signaling willingness to take the Western imperial side in the battle for influence and power in Africa.
I will be attending this space. While peace has come to parts of Raya, it has not yet come to Afar. In this space we will get direct updates on the situation on the ground in Afar.
Five Kebele's in Megale and Ab'ala remain under occupation by TPLF forces. And much of the rest of Zone 2 Afar remains under threat of heavy weapon attacks from the mountains above -resulting in 100s of 1000s not being able to return to their homes.
The two tweets that follow are from Afar accounts related to this issue.
This article from August 27th 2022 (4 days after TPLF invaded North Wollo for a second time) - is peculiar, but what is even more peculiar is that TPLF’s cadres seem to have seized upon it as somehow relevant to the peace process now underway.
Having run out of fresh material to share the TPLF disinformation operation now appears to be draining the swamp looking for material to use to misrepresent the history of the conflict, and the three wars TPLF initiated, on Nov 3 2020, July 13 2021 & August 24 2022.
Sharing old out of date material at maximum volume has been a central part of the current strategic communications plan now for several weeks. The best explanation I can think of for this is that swarming out of date content may help them keep less attentive historic supporters.
The sun rise this morning over Ras Mohammed National park south of Sharm El Sheikh. And what a glorious day, my final day in Africa on a 20 day visit to Ethiopia/Tigray/Sharm El Sheikh leaves me with no many thoughts and such rich memories of people and place.
My plane outward bound for Venice is very pleasantly empty.
The addition of the words “developing countries” to this text was raised with me earlier in the evening with the suggestion that this could result in the exclusion of Pakistan, which depending on how it is interpreted might not be a developing country.
The CMA - Paris Agreement - meeting has now broken for a pause of 30 minutes - to read the latest version of the cover text which has been consulted on by the Presidency over the past 7 hours of unexpected delays in the convening of this closing meeting.
This pause came as a result of a Swiss intervention requesting it, as this final text was only posted to the website as the meeting started. All the subsidiary texts had been cleared and finalized earlier in the day.
A small video tribute to the Scottish Govt. which bravely kicked off the #LossAndDamage implementation pathway last year at #cop26 in Glasgow by establishing a loss and damage fund unilaterally and putting 5 million pounds in it. This was dropped however on the final day.
The Loss & Damage Text was signed off about an hour and a half ago in a meeting convened by the Presidency with only final modifications from the penultimate text.
The Loss and Damage Fund will be established and become tentatively operational at #cop28 in Dubai.
This information is as confirmed from s sources in the meeting. Those present in the meeting included US, EU, UK, G77 an African Minister, Switzerland and others. This has effectively removed the most significant hurdle from #Cop27 concluding successfully later today.
