ORBAT of British Land Forces TF during the Falklands War. The sudden invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentinian Troops on the 2nd of April 1982 sparked an undeclared war with the United Kingdom. A 🧵 @EngageStrategy1@LawDavF@battle_order@WarDiaryF82#RoyalNavy
1. The British Government quickly created a Taskforce to retake the Falklands by force if diplomatic methods failed. The TF needed to travel 13,000 km and transport enough men, equipment, and supplies for an amphibious landing
2. The Land Forces were made up of two non-mechanised infantry brigades: 3 Commando Brigade and 5 Infantry Brigade. 3 Commando was constituted of x3 Royal Marine Commando battalions and x2 Parachute battalions. Together they made up the bulk of the infantry force of the brigade
3. They were supported by x18 105mn guns from the 29 Commando regiment and x5 105mn guns attached to 2nd Parachute Battalion.
4. A key consideration for British commanders at the time was air defence. It was quickly assessed that the x42 Harriers brought by the Carrier Battle Group would not be enough to gain air superiority
5. Therefore, increased importance was put on the ground air defence systems brought by the TF. Blowpipes and Stingers (only used by SAS) MANPADS, and x12 Rapier air defence systems were relied on the mitigate the threat of air attacks.
6. The Rapiers could not be easily transported by vehicle or hand-carried. Therefore, Sea King helicopters were put on permanent call to transport the system as well as to provide ammunition and petrol for the Rapiers’ generators
7. Overall, Unsuitable roads and the complicated geography of the Falklands required constant use of the limited helicopter force to supply the brigade.
8. In addition, the helicopter force had to airlift most of the brigade’s artillery, which left the British commandos and soldiers to march during most of the campaign to retake the islands
9. The lack of helicopters is explained by the lack of space dedicated to them in the TF’s fleet. Since both carriers needed to have as many fighters as possible to contest the Argentinian air force, relatively few transport helicopters were brought in
10. 3 out of the 4 chinooks that were available were also sunk with the Atlantic Conveyor after being hit by two Exocet missiles (@byMBDA 👀), further reducing the airlift capacity of the TF
11. Special Forces played a major role for the TF by doing reconnaissance on the islands and conducted a series of raids to distract the Argentinians from the landing of 3 Commando in San Carlos on the 21st of May
12. 5 Infantry Brigade was a slightly lighter force with x3 infantry battalions, an engineer regiment, x1 air defence squadron and x1 field battery
END. Together, the two brigades fought on the east Falklands to secure Stanley and its airstrip, where most of Argentina’s ground and air forces were stationed. By the night of the 13th of June, Stanley fell into British control, and a ceasefire was declared on the 14th

1. The PLAAF reformed the command structure of its air formations in the late 2000s/early 2010s. It moved from a division-based to a brigade-based formation, essentially reducing the weight of the command structure by deleting one command level
2. In effect, the command structure changed from having a 7-tier (PLAAF HQ –MRAF HQ – command post – air division – air regiment – flight group – flight squadron) to a 6-tiered one (PLAAF HQ – Military Region Air Force HQ – Base – air brigade – flight group – flight squadron)
ORBAT of a French Light Cavalry Regiment of the 80s/early 90s.
The Light Cavalry Regiment is an all-wheeled formation based around the duo AMX-10RC light tank and VAB HOT Mephisto APC #History#Military#frencharmy#80s#90s
The regiment is composed of a Command and Services squadron, x3 Armoured squadrons and an Anti-Tank squadron for a total of 840 personnel, and 268 vehicles, including 36 AMX-10RC and 12 VAB HOT
Looking at the other French tank formations of the time. The dedicated anti-tank formation equipped with the VAB HOT seems to be unique. Other tank formations utilize the 4x4 with a MILAN ATGM attached
Overall, the brigade is a combined arms formation comprising Tank and Mechanised regiments supported by a substantial armoured Recon regt, an Artillery regt, an Engineer regt and the brigade’s logistics
Before we go into any more detail, it is important to note that Italian regiments are, in effect, equivalent to a US Army battalion which generally includes between 4-6 companies and up to 1000 soldiers
ORBAT of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence mission as of October 2022. A 🧵 #Military#WeAreNATO
Most of the information used was found on various NATO websites and scouring MODs' official Twitter accounts for clues as to what kind of contribution countries made, so bear in mind that it probably does not fully represent the composition of the BGs
eFP was launched in 2016 to deploy 4 multinational battlegroups (battalion-strength) in Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to defend and deter any attacks from Russia and Belarus and to ensure an attack on one would be an attack on all
Operational CATOBAR Aircraft Carriers and their Air Wing (late 2010s). Let’s look at the air wing composition of the Nimitz Class and Charles de Gaulle and see how they compare. #USNavy#Aircraft#Military#Jets
But first, we will look at the role and capabilities of each aircraft. We will take the Nimitz Class’s air wing as an example.
Quick note: The next infographic will cover the evolution of these carriers, their air wings and China’s arrival to the club
The US Carrier Air Wing (CVW) has x44 F/A-18 Super Hornet multirole fighter. Meaning it can do almost any mission an aircraft could do: Air to Air engagements, Ground strikes, Anti-Ship, Suppression of Air defence… They are the main weapon of the carrier
Here is an infographic representing all of the MBTs, IFVs, AFVs, APC, MRAPs and IMVs delivered or pledged to Ukraine since February 24. #UkraineRussiaWar
Some thoughts: Poland and Czechia are the two main contributors concerning MBTs and IFVs. Most of that equipment is upgraded soviet era armour.
Comparatively, the US is the main contributor in APCs and IMVs, sending M113s and Humvees primarily. The M113 and its variants are also the main type of APC given to the AFU
