Union Carbide Corporation 'UCC' had majority stake in the UCIL while Indian Govt held 49% stake in the Company

In 1989, UCC took the moral responsibility and paid a claim of $470 million in a U.S court as against India's claim of 2+ billion dollar. The responsibility of the accident was put on Indian Govt.

June 2010, seven Indian nationals who were UCIL employees in 1984, including the former UCIL chairman, were convicted in Bhopal of causing death by negligence and sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of about $2,000 but CEO Warren Anderson remain unscathed.
