1/ Hold on to your controlled vocabulary #medlibs friends, it's time for a thread on annual changes to Medical Subject Headings #2023MeSH!
The files were released a couple of weeks ago, but now... now the MeSH database has been updated. But first, a few housekeeping things:
2/ Some links for those who really want details on #2023MeSH:
➡️What's new with MeSH
nlm.nih.gov/mesh/whatsnew.…
➡️MeSH browser
meshb.nlm.nih.gov
➡️MeSH database (tied to PubMed)
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh
3/ In case you are curious about past threads I've done on annual MeSH changes (previous to #2023MeSH):
➡️ 2021
➡️ 2022
4/ So what's new for #2023MeSH? A LOT. After scanning the New Headings with Scope Notes file, it's clear that someone has really taken a deep dive into Population Groups. To do it justice, I'm going to make that a separate thread later, with added context. As for the rest...
5/ #2023MeSH has some new terms under Infections:
> Breakthrough Infections "Infections by the same infectious agent (e.g., virus, fungus) occurring during exposure to prophylaxis, vaccine and treatment."
>Allergic Fungal Sinusitis
>Tuberculosis, Extrapulmonary
6/ #2023MeSH elevates a previous supplemental concept to a full MeSH descriptor:
Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome "Post acute stage of COVID-19 virus infection. Persistent symptoms may include FATIGUE; DYSPNEA; and MEMORY LOSS."
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/2103261
7/ Basically, we got a (much needed) #LongCovid MeSH term in #2023MeSH. Just look at all those entry terms. For comparison, second screenshot is supplemental concept record. ImageImage
8/ Along with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome, there's a fair number of new Respiratory Tract Diseases terms for #2023MeSH:
>Allergic Fungal Sinusitis
>Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome
>Dust Mite Allergy
>Organizing Pneumonia
>Platypnea Orthodeoxia Syndrome
9/ #2023MeSH has a bunch of new Urogenital Diseases too - a fair number seem to be focused on folks assigned female at birth:
Bicornuate Uterus
Septate Uterus
Uterine Didelphys
Uterine Duplication Anomalies
10/ There's also a term for Chronic Kidney Diseases of Uncertain Etiology in #2023MeSH
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/2103197 ImageImage
11/ A lot of Cardiovascular Diseases in #2023MeSH, a few that jumped out at me:
>Acute Aortic Syndrome
>Dissection, Abdominal Aorta
>Dissection, Ascending Aorta
>Dissection, Blood Vessel
>Dissection, Thoracic Aorta
>Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Type IV
>Popliteal Artery Aneurysm
12/ Personally, I was really hoping that "Coronary Artery Dissection, Spontaneous" [Supplementary Concept] would get elevated to full descriptor in #2023MeSH, but sadly no. Maybe next year.
Maybe I should do another separate thread on terms that *didn't* change...🤔
13/ Some Immune System Diseases terms for #2023MeSH:
>Venom Hypersensitivity
>Drug Fever "Drug-induced fever" (that definition sure is helpful. heh)
>Chronic Inducible Urticaria
>Exercise-Induced Allergies
14/ #2023MeSH Urticaria, Solar
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/2103147
I really want to AND with Legendary Creatures[mh], see what happens
15/ A whole lot added to Wounds and Injuries tree, specifically with fractures #2023MeSH
>Elbow Fractures
>Elbow Injuries
>Femoral Fractures, Distal
>Fibula Fractures
>Hoffa Fracture
>Humeral Fractures, Distal
I've had 2 from that list. But wait, there's still more...
16/ #2023MeSH
>Olecranon Fracture
>Knee Fractures
>Patella Fracture
>Proximal Femoral Fractures
>Radial Head and Neck Fractures
>Tibial Plateau Fractures
>Wrist Fractures
Had a couple from that list, too.
17/ #2023MeSH has some new Diagnosis terms:
>Clinical Relevance
>Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (that will be handy)
>Motion Capture
>Nerve Conduction Studies
>Rapid Diagnostic Tests
>Urinary Sediment Analysis
18/ #2023MeSH new Therapeutics terms:
>Blood Banking
>Bridge Therapy (oooh, I will use this!)
>Cognitive Training (COVID-related?)
>Olfactory Training (anyone want to be this is COVID-related too?)
19/ Speaking of COVID and Theraeputics, #2023MeSH elevated from supplementary concept:
>COVID-19 Drug Treatment
>COVID-19 Serotherapy ImageImage
20/ some assigned male at birth terms in #2023MeSH:
>Penile Transplantation
>Phalloplasty
>Sperm Proteins
>Seminal Proteins
21/ #2023MeSH I would have expected existed already:
>Tattoo Removal
>Obesity Paradox "An observation that high BODY MASS INDEX is sometimes associated with lower CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE mortality in certain population, e.g., ELDERLY."
ah yes, the fat elderly 🙄
22/ they've added some Physiological Phenomena terms for #2023MeSH
>Intermittent Fasting
>Elimination Diets
>FODMAP Diet
>Food, Processed
>Immunonutrition Diet
23/ #2023MeSH some social sciences/connection terms:
>Extended Family
>Family Structure
>Family Support
>Group Dynamics
>Social Group
>Psychological Well-Being
24/ Update any SDOH/disparities search hedges with #2023MeSH:
>Low Socioeconomic Status
>Residential Segregation
>Antiracism
>Diversity, Equity, Inclusion
>Socioeconomic Disparities in Health
>Value-Based Health Care
>Resource-Limited Settings
>Access to Primary Care
25/ Some climate-related terms to consider from #2023MeSH:
>Wildlife Trade
>Drought Resistance
>Ocean Acidification

And occupational groups:
>Combat Medics
>Paramedics
>Traditional Medicine Practitioners
>Gynecologists
>Obstetricians
(how did we not have those last 2 already?!)
26/ #2023MeSH also adds:
>Suicide Prevention
>Working Conditions
>Dental Care Team
>Tobacco Control
>Blood Donation
>Case Reports as Topic
>Military Sexual Trauma (sadly needed)
27/ #2023MeSH for information and data folks:
>Secondary Data Analysis
>Document Analysis
>Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
>Evidence Gaps (huh)
>Information Sources "Various communications media, information centers, information services that are utilized to obtain information."
28/ Obviously there's more #2023MeSH - including the Persons/Population Group changes that I'll cover in another thread. I highly encourage #medlibs and others who care about these things to take time to skim the documents and explore. These terms matter and can a big impact.
29/ A few things to note: you won't be able to use these terms (or have them apply to Automatic Term Mapping) in PubMed/MEDLINE searches until year end processing is complete and they begin indexing with #2023MeSH. There's often a longer delay in other platforms like Ovid.
30/ Also, these terms, when they are used, will only apply to citations moving forward - no going back and adding them to older records. The exception is when a #2023MeSH term was previously a supplementary concept - then it will be applied/superceded.
31/ for folks looking for part 2 where I cover Population Groups, see this thread:

1/ Welcome back #medlibs, #critlib, #critcat, and other folks for part 2 of my what's new for #2023MeSH thread. ICYMI, the original thread:
2/ As I noted in the previous #2023MeSH thread, there's a lot of new terms under Population Groups, which is why this is getting its own thread.
3/ Before I get into #2023MeSH though, I think it's important to provide some context on why there are so many new terms and changes. I'm going to cover a brief timeline. Apologies in advance, because I may have missed or overlooked people and events along the way.
