Ok. I’ve done all three. (Watching at 1.5x speed is very helpful). #HarryandMeghan
So where to start …?
Essentially, this is a story of so much promise that ended in acrimony and sadness. With family breakdowns on both sides (Harry and Meghan’s). It’s a pretty sad situation all round #HarryandMeghanNetflix
Harry and Meghan - along with friends, family and supportive colleagues - make the case that the breakdown can be blamed on: 1. tabloid press 2. the inability of the Monarchy and a country built on the riches of Empire, to adapt to Meghan’s arrival in the UK
Through video diaries recorded as #HarryandMeghan left the Royal Family and in interviews with the @netflix director, the case is made that the Royal Family has a “contact” with press: in return for taxpayers funding the Monarchy, the press expert the Family to “perform” for them
Harry says much of his trauma goes back, understandably, to his mother’s experience with photographers.
Says the majority of his childhood memories are being "swarmed” by the paparazzi.
Says he grew up “without much support or guidance” after the death of Diana. #HarryandMeghan
On Meghan’s arrival as his bride-to-be, Harry says his family considered all the harassment and difficulties she faced a “rite of passage”. The Royal Family attitude, Harry claims, was a ‘well my wife and girlfriend faced that so why shouldn’t Meghan?”
Meghan says she was in ‘ripped jeans’ and ‘barefoot’ when she first met William and Kate. And the fact that she is a ‘hugger’ was ‘jarring for a lot of Brits’.
She suggests it was a sign that her informality virus their formality would be a big problem.
Meghan says “I thought it was a joke” when she was told she would have to curtsy to Harry’s grandmother, the Queen on their first meeting.
In her interview, Meghan performs a deep bow with her arms outstretched and says “Pleasure to meet you Your Majesty” and asked “was that ok?”
Meghan says: “people are very aware of my race because they made it such an issue when I went to the UK but before that most people didn’t treat me like a black woman”.
Meghan says, as she has before, she never fitted in as a child as she had a black mother and white father.
Meghan’s mum says she warned her daughter the way the world saw her was all about race.
Doria Ragland told Netflix: “I said to her, and I remember this very clearly, this is about race…you make not want to hear it but this is what is coming down the pike [road]”. #HarryandMeghan
Harry claims the Royal Family attitude was ‘why should Meghan be protected, all royal wives went through this intrusion”?
Harry says he responded to them with: “The difference here is the race element.”
Meghan says “they” (she means the tabloids) were out to destroy her.
She told Netflix: “But truth be told, no matter how hard I tried, no mater how good I was, no matter what I did, they were still going to find a way to destroy me.”
Harry and Meghan’s pooled engagement interview - the one they did with BBC’s @MishalHusain was, according to Meghan, “an orchestrated reality show” and “it was, you know, rehearsed” and “we weren’t allowed to tell our story".
Meghan adds in her Netflix interview: “until now…”
In his analysis of how the media relationship with the Royal Family works, Harry says that ‘Royal Correspondent’ is a title given to a select group of journlaists to give newspaper stories “credibility” and they are “essentially just an extended PR arm of the Royal Family.”
Dressing up as a Nazi for a party was, says Harry, “one of the biggest mistakes of my life” and he “felt so ashamed afterwards”. But “I learned from that” he says and spoke to the Chief Rabbi in London and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. #HarryandMeghanonNetflix
Meghan says “most of the time…in the UK I rarely wore colour” because "you can’t ever wear the same colour as Her Majesty if there’s a group event” but she shouldn’t wear same colour “as one of the other more senior members of the Family.” So she chose a lot of “muted tones”.
On Thomas Markle and his deal with the paparazzi, Meghan says she “didn’t believe him” at first when he denied the story. Harry says he carries guilt about what happened to the relationship: “I shouldered that because if Meg wasn’t with me, then her dad would still be her dad.”
In the 2020 video diaries, they recorded in London and in Vancouver Island, Canada, Harry spoke about how he was concerned for the safety of his family due to “the level of hate that has been stirred up in the last 3 years, especially against my wife and my son”. #HarryandMeghan
In a trailer for the next 3 epodes, Meghan says “this is when a family and a family business are in direct conflict”.
Harry: “Everything that’s happened to us was always going to happen to us".
What clicked in my head says Meghan “it’s never going to stop”.
The Royal Family says Harry is “part of the problem” on race.
He refers to the time the wife of the Queen’s cousin wore the infamous Blackamoor brooch and says "there is a huge level of unconsious bias” in this family.
