"death is a natural part of life"

- Nasser Al Khater, CEO of the 2022 World Cup, responding to another migrant worker death...

Extreme callousness.

It just shows how much #Qatar and #WorldCup2022 don't care about the people who built the tournament.

There is clear evidence of thousands of migrant worker deaths in the lead-up to the #WorldCup. Authorities failed to conduct meaningful investigations into a large percentage of them, classifying many as unexplained or due to “natural causes.”

People died so FIFA and friends can make kabillions, and they won't even acknowledge the deaths now?

When you're involved in serious human rights abuses, you can't just wish for good press, and you can't buy it via PR firms either.

You have a terrible reputation for a reason - the abuses - and to fix your reputation, you have to address those abuses.

Respecting human rights is not just "something nice to do" or simply "the right thing to do."

It's also not just the legal thing to do.

It's essential for human security - locally, nationally & internationally.
Expecting governments to respect human rights - rather than letting leaders get away with their crimes, which only bolsters their power - will save you a lot of security-related troubles down the line.

Russia’s widespread and repeated targeting of #Ukraine’s energy infrastructure appears primarily designed to instill terror.

Yet another Russian violation of the laws of war…

hrw.org/news/2022/12/0… Image
Russia seems intent on making life untenable for as many civilians as possible.

The laws of war prohibit attacks on objects key to the survival of the civilian population and violence or threats, “the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population.”
Russian politicians, lawmakers, and other commentators on Russian state media widely applauded the prospect of Ukrainian civilians being left without heat and water in winter.

“Plastics,” says Mr McGuire to a bewildered Benjamin in the iconic scene from 1967's The Graduate, “There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it.”

We’ve had 55 years to think about it…

Now, we're living in the future: a plastics crisis with human rights impacts.
🧵
It is a human rights issue...

The production, use, and disposal of plastics have significant impacts we should all be concerned about as rights-minded individuals – and as rights-respecting governments.
⚠️ First, plastics contain toxic chemical additives, and these can pose significant threats to human health.

⚠️ Second, because most are made from fossil fuels, plastics are helping to drive the climate crisis, which in turn threatens human rights.

There’s a particular line of nonsense out there, pushed hard by an abusive regime flooding PR firms with cash to help spread a lie.

This calls for a 🧵 to debunk it, starting with some history…
Let’s start with 2004…

In that year, Human Rights Watch launched a “China Olympics Watch” website to monitor issues of censorship, unlawful evictions, and labor rights abuses occurring in the run-up to the 2008 summer Olympics in China.

We the talked about rights abuses in China, both outside and within the context of Beijing hosting the 2008 Olympics.

We targeted sponsors, too, for example…
