Since the capital of India moved from #Calcutta (Kolkata) to #Delhi, for some reason the hatred for Mukherjees became evident. I can guess why #RajaJoykrishna was wiped out, but why his younger cousin #SirAshutoshMukherjee? If you are a student of #Mathematics, have u ever (1/n)

(2/n) been taught "Mookerji Theorems"? While Raja Joykrishna Mukherjee was the architect of #CalcuttaUniversity (I will be publishing the complete proposal he gave to Cecil Beadon) the 3 biggest financial contributors were Sir Ashutosh, Taraknath Palit and eminent barrister++

(3/n) Rashbehari Ghose.
Trivia: There is a debate whether Rashbehari Avenue is named after Rashbehari Bose of Rashbehari Ghose. Their GGG Grandson is a good friend of mine and interestingly there is rift in the family over this. Bose was from his mother's side while Ghose.....

Anyway coming back to Sir Ashutosh and his forgotten legacy. The trio donated close to Rs. 50 Lakhs while #RajaJoykrishnaMukherjee's able son #RajaPearyMohanMukherjee built the Calcutta University Library along with gifting a mamoth number of books and++

(5/n) scholarly journals. When I was very young I remember dad taking me to the Calcutta University Library to show me a beautiful marble plaque dedicated to Raja Peary Mohan. I believe it's been stolen and sold in the black market. Anyway, with the endowments Ashutosh Mukherjee

(7/n) appointed the 2 best minds India had at time as faculty - P C Ray, Nobel Laureate C V Raman, SN Bose, Megnad Saha to name a few. C V Raman was an accounts officer in the Indian Finance Department. European members of the University Senate had objected to Raman’s appointment

(8/n) as Palit Professor. Sir Ashutosh with the help of his cousin Raja Peary Mohan, who was then the Chair of Indian and Bengal Legislature, Chair of Privy Council and Chair of British India Association overrode the British diktat. That my friends, is history!
