Game development is often misunderstood as a "lazy" industry, with the perception being that developers just sit around playing games all day.
However, this could not be further from the truth for most of us.
Or is it?
🧵👇
What is commonly known as lazy?
- being unwilling to work, put in the time or make an effort.
- lack of discipline or motivation in regards to completing tasks or achieving goals.
- may prefer to take the easy way out or avoid work altogether
Laziness is subjective and can vary from person to person.
What one person considers lazy may be normal or hardworking to another.
Remember that people may appear lazy due to lack of resources or support, not necessarily a lack of motivation or desire to work.
I have yet to encounter a truly lazy person.
There can be a number of factors that contribute to "laziness"
It's important to note that laziness is not a fixed trait and can often be overcome with the right mindset and strategies.
Do you consider yourself lazy?
Here are some causes for being "lazy":
1. Lack of motivation 2. Procrastination (Overwhelm) 3. Lack of energy 4. Lack of structure 5. Lack of confidence or self-esteem 6. Boredom (Not finding the task meaningful) 7. External factors (lack of support,etc...)
Developing a game is a complex and labor-intensive process that requires a wide range of skills and expertise.
It involves everything from designing gameplay mechanics and creating art assets to writing code and debugging.
From what I have seen game developers work long hours and often have to meet tight deadlines.
They also have to be constantly learning and adapting to new technologies and trends in the industry.
That in itself can be quite energy draining.
In addition to the technical skills required, game development also requires creative problem-solving and collaboration.
Developers have to constantly come up with new ideas and work together to bring them to life.
Game development is also a highly competitive field, with many talented developers applying for a limited number of jobs.
Those who are successful in the industry have worked hard to get where they are and continue to put in a lot of effort to stay competitive.
Considering all these issues, you can already guess, that there are multiple layers to this problem.
The likelihood of you being overworked and out of energy is already so high, simply by the amount of context switching and tasks available.
So the next time you think of yourself as "lazy," remember that game devs are highly skilled professionals who work hard to bring joy and entertainment to players around the world.
Being a game dev is more complex, than meets the eye.
In our Hero Journey program, we make sure you are not burning out, by looking at your week first and helping you structure your time management.
Many of our clients had very positive experience by simply structuring their day-to-day.
In my experience, it's rather about ....
The order of the things you are doing, instead of how many.
I have seen many game devs try to do "more", instead of less, but smarter.
Squishing in hours after a job or when they are already without energy.
