When it comes to #drifting control is everything. And when it comes to control, the tyres are everything
For setting India’s longest #drift record @VredesteinIndia hooked us up with 3 sets of ultra-high-performance Ultrac Vorti tyres. For an automotive journalist this is mana from heaven — “Here’s 15 #Vredestein tyres for you, Sirish. Go nuts with them” 😎
The Ultrac Vorti tyres are designed in Europe, styled by Giuguario no less & are now #MadeInIndia tuned for our conditions (not that it matters for #drifting but it immediately made a big difference to ride comfort)
#Vredestein also provided us access to its permanent facility at the NATRAX — a full-blown R&D centre with some of the top engineers and testers in the business.
On slippery surfaces tyres also delivered grip we needed (without grip we will just slide out of the circle & into the ditch, plus we need grip so the car can put down power and rotate the back end) allowing me to know precisely how much throttle to use to keep the slide going
And we did the entire record on one set of tyres. Through the enormous stresses drifting puts on tyres they lasted for the full 10 minutes and 23 seconds. I gave up before the tyres did!
We’ve just gone live with the extended cut of the drift record 👇
here we detail the practice runs, the fails & frustrations, how we eventually pieces it together, everything in fact that you guys asked us after the (shorter) first video
Still can’t believe I had 3 sets of tyres and two days to drift the life out of them all. Somebody pinch me

“NCAP assumes all regulators world over really don’t know their business”, says Maruti Suzuki chairman R C Bhargava. Responding to questions about the recent G-NCAP crash test results at the annual media meet he said:
“Nobody looks at why do accidents happen in India. When you really think of it should safety not be related to preventing accidents?”
“There are two major areas we [India] are way behind others”
“[First is] Vehicle fitness. How do you ensure vehicles on road remain as compliant with [OE] safety features? There are no laws, no regulation, to govern that. [There is] No certification for vehicle fitness. Lots of accidents due to failure of some systems.”
Plenty of comments on my recent post on #hybrid, especially from #EV enthusiasts — here’s some facts & figures:
1. The automotive value chain - 50% of revenue & 60% of employment goes into the IC engine + transmission so.... what happens to all the jobs if we move to EV? 1/7
The current infrastructure for IC vs EV isn’t so relevant, cause infra can be scaled up very quickly.
What you should look at is where is 🇮🇳 on the raw materials required for EVs, localisation of electric vehicle components & the sort.
Batteries, btw, are 50% of EV cost 2/7
Where does India’s electricity come from? Coal!
But we have ambitious targets for renewable energy by 2031 3/7
