BREAKING:
The Canadian government officially triggers the start of a legal pathway to hold the regime in Iran accountable for its shoot-down of Flight #PS752.
Canada, Ukraine, Sweden, UK invoked the 1971 Montreal convention, on behalf of their nationals killed onboard the flight.
Under Article 14 of the Convention the parties have 6 months to agree on arbitration --in this case, Canada, Ukraine, Sweden, UK negotiating with the regime in Iran.
Failing those negotiations the case may be brought before the International Court of Justice at the Hague.
On January 8, 2020, all 176 people onboard Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 were killed, when the Iranian regime's IRGC shot down the plane with two surface-to-air missiles.
Most had ties to Canada, including 55 Canadian citizens and 35 permanent residents.
It's noteworthy, that this January the coalition of countries that lost citizens on #PS752 abandoned its efforts to negotiate reparations with the regime in Iran -- after being repeatedly "stonewalled".
Joint statement from the International Coordination and Response Group for the victims of Flight #PS752 on arbitration
Another significant point, is that recently the regime has seemingly been trying to preempt all this, by reportedly pretending to stage "trials" on PS752.
Arguably, this can be interpreted as a sign the regime is worried and vulnerable to this type of potential judicial scrutiny.
Hamed @esmaeilion says while he's grateful for this step forward on making the regime in Iran accountable for the downing - Iran will not cooperate with the 4 affected countries.
He says the @Ps752justice Association expects the case to go to the Hague on May 28th, 2023.
Note:
If I’m not mistaken, the date the case could go before the International Court of Justice would actually be June 28, 2023.

The comments on the alleged "abolishment" of the morality-police stem from the Iranian regime's attorney general, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri.
Let's break down what he actually said in official Iranian state media.
Montazeri said the following:
"The morality police has nothing to do with the judiciary system. The same source that created it in the past, from the same place it has shut down. Of course, the judiciary system will continue its surveillance of social behaviours across society."

Italian paper @Corriere accuses NYT of downplaying the murder of Italian grad student Davide Giri.
Giri was stabbed to death by a suspected gang member.
@Corriere says this is an example of the risks of "new militant journalism".
"This story offers a disturbing look at the 'new journalism', militant and conditioned by its ideological agenda. Even its crime reporting bends to this tribal logic."
Columbia University revealed that the second victim, Roberto Malaspina is a visiting scholar newly arrived from Italy with plans to study for several months at Columbia University School of the Arts.
