What predicts drug free remission of T2D on a low carb diet and what happens to those who don’t achieve remission? We publish today here nutrition.bmj.com/content/early/… 97% of participants who chose low carb improved their diabetic control 51% achieved drug free remission #hope 😊
The very famous Professor Roy Taylor was our senior author He and I have a shared belief that by improving diet drugs are very often not needed to improve diabetic control as this pie chart shows @DiabetesUK #hope
So after nearly three years on a low carb diet for their #T2D what happened to the markers of cardiovascular risk ? Significant improvements in blood pressure, weight cholesterol and triglyceride 👍

A short thread on joint pain and low carb: Ten years ago both @jen_unwin and I suffered with chronic joint pain, particularly the morning after exercise. For Jen it was her knees for me ankles which throbbed ++ the morning after a long walk. Over the years this got worse 😞
Jen also developed Heberden's nodes on her fingers We assumed it was wear & tear arthritis & accepted it would just get worse BUT ten years later GONE! Here we are walking 25km (15 miles) The next morning NO PAIN! We were both able to go for a (slow) run, & I am over 60 now cont
I used to see osteoarthritis as a slow inevitable decline as the lining of my joints wore down, like the tread on a tyre. BUT I WAS WRONG! Our joints are a dynamic system with inflammation at the core of osteoarthritis, so improvement is possible But it may be slow, for me years

1/7 My 7sugar infographics are back! They help people with T2D predict the glycaemic consequences of dietary choices. Carbs are the main drivers of blood sugar. Here I reinterpret the glycaemic load as approx. 4g teaspoons of table sugar. Freely available phcuk.org/sugar/
2/7 The 7 sugar infographics are now available in 14 languages and no copyright, so please use freely. Starchy carbs like bread or rice digest down into surprising amounts of glucose look. If you have #T2D perhaps turn the white stuff green?
3/7 This used to be the breakfast I recommended for my patients but a heavy glycaemic load was the result and a higher blood sugar for many of them. Using a lower carb approach my GP practice now uses far fewer drugs for T2diabetes Read about it here nutrition.bmj.com/content/early/…

1/8 My latest teaspoon of sugar infogram is here! nice.org.uk/guidance/ng28/… … These represent the glycaemic load of portions of various foods to help you predict the glycaemic consequences of dietary choices. Based on this paper insulinresistance.org/index.php/jir/… The others will follow
2/8. I wanted to show that glucose can come from three sources: Naturally sugary foods. Foods with added sugar. Starchy foods that digest down into surprisingly large ammounts of glucose The glycaemic load of each food is re-worked out in terms of 4g. teaspoons of table sugar
3/8 This is the first infogram. Diet makes such a difference to #T2D This has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times. All have been translated into five languages so far. Find them and the translations here: phcuk.org/sugar/ There is no copyright so share at will.

1/4: GRAPH OF THE WEEK! Abnormal liver function, fatty liver #NAFLD #NASH now affects 20% of the developed world BUT WHY? For years I thought it was drugs or alcohol, so did the Three gastroenterologists who saw this lady between 1996 and 2009 Look rapid improvement on low carb
2/4 Who knew but we make liver fat not from dietary fats but sugar and starchy carbs Its called De novo lipogenesis. Guess what insulin and glucose is involved, look doi.org/10.1172/JCI134… The liver fat produced is called triglyceride and is more important than I used to think
3/4 So its like insulin pushes blood glucose into liver cells which turn it into triglyceride. Over time the liver fills with this fat hence #fattyliver #NAFLD also inflammation may set in #NASH My free @rcgp podcast is here only 18 mins @MartinRCGP elearning.rcgp.org.uk/mod/page/view.…
