Two years ago today Republicans orchestrated a volent insurrection on our nation’s Capitol.

The same people who supported the January 6th attack are now holding our House of Representatives hostage and rendering it non-functional by refusing to elect of Speaker of the House.

Their intent on Jan 6th was to murder members of congress and/or the Vice President in hopes this would allow for the declaration of Martial Law, move the process outside the boundaries of constitutional precedent and Trump could establish himself as America’s first dictator.

Today the Republican Party’s intent to forcefully transition our country away from operating as a representative democracy is still ongoing. The Republican ideal that a white minority rule should be accepted as the norm is on full display in the House

20 Republicans have not only successfully shut down governance in the House of Representatives this week, they have also had their behavior rewarded as more and more of their demands are met and yet still they refuse to come together to elect a Speaker and get busy governing.

The Washington Post is reporting people have raised millions to help with legal funds and prison amenities for the 900 or so insurrectionists who have faced legal consequences. Churches across the country are holding prayer groups and calling these individuals heroes & patriots.

Without legal consequences for Boebert who tweeted Nancy Pelosi’s whereabouts during the terrorist attack, or Trump who refused to call the national guard to defend the Capitol; people are left to believe that perhaps what they did wasn’t so terribly wrong after all. But it was.

Those Trying to murder members of congress and the Vice President on January 6th as they smashed the walls of the Capitol and chanted death chants and would 142 officers and smeared their shot on the walls are not heroes, nor are they victims. They are traitors.

Today you’re likely going to see a tremendous amount of gaslighting from Republicans as they try to paint Ashli Babbit as a hero and a victim. She is neither. She is a person who embraced a lie about our election integrity that Republicans are still embracing.

I know most Americans want to move on from January 6th. But with Republicans trying to legalize state legislative oversight of federal elections (see MOORE v Harper) the coup is ongoing. Please do not look away from this.

Especially today.

Today should be a day we promise never to forget how close we came to having our democracy destroyed by the Republican Party and we should reaffirm our promise to do everything we can to protect our democratic Institutions from Republican deconstruction.

It’s important to note one of the first things Republicans did this week was remove the metal detectors from the entrance to the House of Representatives’ chamber. The fact Republicans felt it was a priority to make it easier to bring weapons into congress speaks volumes.

Stop making excuses for these domestic terrorists.

If we want our children and grandchildren to grow up in a country which celebrates the potential of liberty and justice for all not just the wealthy White few then we cannot afford to look away from this day.

If we want to leave our country in better shape than we found it for future generations we are going to have to continue to do the work to ensure Republican extremism finds its way into the dustbin of history where it belongs.

I will never forget watching the violence. I will never forget the phone calls I received from friends who were terrified I was at the Capitol protesting. I will never forget people like me trying to raise the alarm but many still didn’t believe it could happen here.

But it did happen here.
And now we have to make sure that it never happens again.
