So after my recent tweet got some traction, here is what I have learnt about how public perception of GPs. A 🧵
GPs are apparently awful for not responding quickly enough to someone calling having a heart attack. (GPs are not an emergency service. If you think you are having a heart attack - please call 999 or go to A&E)
GPs apparently earn a fortune which is bad. The evidence for our ‘fortune’ is apparently because of our houses and cars. Not on the mandatory declaration of GP earnings each surgery publishes on their website.
GPs should not be allowed to take annual leave.
GPs should work 7 days a week, 365 days a year like hospitals. Even though there isn’t enough GPs to cover that level of service, hospital doctors cover evenings/weekends on an out of hours on call basis & GP out of hours on call cover is available evenings/overnights/weekends
Other health care professionals feel we have ‘hid behind covid’ with remote consultations even though hospital outpatient appointments are still often done remotely & evidence shows GPs were the first to get back to as normal a service as possible post covid waves.
The big one - GPs only work part time & people do not believe that a typical GPs day is 10-14 hours a day with no breaks so ‘part time’ work is actually full time hours (but not paid full time).
So GPs with other important NHS roles or GPs who are carers for family members or GPs with young children or GPs with their own health problems should just suck it up & work full time. Despite working part time happens in all sorts of jobs, GPs shouldn’t be part time. Ever.
GPs expect nurses to do unreasonable things like prescribing (even though nurses do prescribing courses for this reason which is excellent training & boosts their CVs). Promoting receptionists to be HCAs & training them for phlebotomy is wrong. Pharmacists doing reviews is wrong.
It is a disgrace that practice staff & their families weren’t at work as they were unwell with covid so they couldn’t run a practice with a full complement of staff.
GP waiting rooms are empty because we’re not doing anything or seeing patients. It’s not because we are trying to avoid waiting rooms packed to the brim of people sharing their covid/flu. Triaging is just a way of not doing our job, not assessing the best way to help our patients
When showing concrete evidence of what is happening in Primary Care, I’m talking ‘crap’, ‘bull 💩’, I show no insight, I’m ‘extremely rude’ (I’ve tried to be as polite as possible) & get blocked because people don’t want to listen. People don’t want to know the facts.
People think we are lying, greedy, lazy & overpaid. They have no respect for us. They prefer to listen to the media & government who want to use GPs as a scapegoat to bring down Primary Care to shill to their rich friends.
They want to make it like NHS Dentistry & access to free healthcare will end. Do you know GPs would actually be better off if that happened or if as @wesstreeting has said today make GP a fully salaried service? Do you know most GPs don’t want that to happen as they know it will
negatively affect patient’s health? But no, we are just greedy and lazy.
We’re so greedy & lazy that GPs are leaving the job as the workload is untenable. We’re so awful that GPs are committing suicide due to the pressures we are facing. Being a GP is so easy & well paid there is
Recruitment & retention crisis. No one want to be a GP anymore, even though it is ‘so easy’ & we ‘earn a fortune’.

I want to end this with thanking some thanks - my GP practice colleagues. I’ve worked in 3 different practices over the past 2yrs&also in the 3 specialist clinics
I have witnessed how hard you have worked & the commitment you have given every day. I am proud to have worked with you all.

My own GP practice for responding to my econsult about my sick child on the same day (although you really need to get Accurx set up, it’s great!)
#teamgp for having each other’s backs and #medtwitter for showing me that not all secondary care docs think GPs are rubbish.
