Benin journalist Virgile Ahouansè held for 2 days, charged with spreading false news

#Benin: An officer with the police criminal brigade called internet radio station Crystal News' Virgile Ahouansè & asked him to appear at a police station in Porto-Novo. When Ahouansè arrived at the station, officers arrested him & held him for 48 hours.

#Benin: Virgile Ahouansè was released on bail on Dec. 22, & is due to appear in court on Feb. 13 to face charges of spreading false news aimed at disturbing the peace. If convicted, he faces up to six months in prison & a fine under Benin’s digital code.

The charge against Virgile Ahouansè stems from his investigation published December 14, 2022, which accused police of carrying out extrajudicial killings. During his detention, authorities questioned him about that investigation for more than five hours.
