We have today sent a formal complaint to the President of the UN HRC, endorsed by many other groups & individuals internationally, about the conduct of Independent Expert for SOGI Victor Madrigal-Borloz. He pursues his own agenda instead of his mandate. lgballiance.org.uk/formal-complai…
1/
We have today written to the incoming President of the UN Human Rights Council with a long and
detailed complaint about the failure of the Independent Expert on SOGI, Victor Madrigal-Borloz, to fulfil his mandate.
3/
In short, he dedicates himself to the “GI” part of his mandate while largely ignoring the “SO” part. He urges countries to introduce gender self-ID and promotes the activist manifesto known as the Yogyakarta Principles instead of doing his job.
4/
He has proposed no plan to counter the criminalization of same-sex relations in 69 countries. He has proposed no plan to counter the worldwide discrimination and violence targeting people with same-sex sexual orientation.
5/
He repeatedly insists that gender self-ID poses no risk to the rights of LGB people or women, despite being supplied with a mountain of evidence to the contrary.
6/
Besides dismissing the facts presented to him, he also misrepresents the law, asserting that international human rights law requires the introduction of gender self-ID.
7/
He is required to publish the submissions he receives, but he does not publish those from LGB groups that reject gender identity ideology, apparently deeming them “hateful”.
8/
Our letter to the President of the Human Rights Council concludes:
“It may be that you find yourself in sympathy with Victor Madrigal-Borloz’s views, or have taken
them to be progressive.
If so, we would like to add this.
9/
People who are attracted to others of the
same sex are subjected to discrimination and violence worldwide - whatever their beliefs. That is
assuredly one of the key reasons the SOGI mandate was created.
10/
We represent gay, lesbian and bisexual people who might be assumed to deserve protection under the SOGI mandate.
11/
However, it is clear from everything Victor Madrigal-Borloz says and does that he considers us only worthy of attention if we mouth the mantras: ‘Trans women are women, trans men are men, non-binary
identities are valid.’
That is a belief system.
12/
It is entirely separate from sexual orientation. We do not share this belief system. Our sexual orientation has nothing to do with how someone identifies.
13/
Please let us know if it is now the established view at the United Nations that lesbian, gay and bisexual people who do not subscribe to this belief system no longer deserve its protection.
14/
It would be good to know whether or not we are still included in the global family of the United Nations.
Yours sincerely,
Kate Harris and Bev Jackson

Today is #BiVisibilityDay
2021 ONS estimates put the prevalence of bisexuality at 1.1% of the UK population, rising to 5.3% of 16-24 year olds.
We saw yesterday that attitudes to LGB people generally had improved, but here are some stats on bisexuality specifically (thread)

#BiVisibilityDay
From reading Prof Michael Biggs’ paper on the history of puberty blockers we find that of the first 70 children on the “Dutch Protocol”, 8.6% were bisexual.
One further child did not know their sexual orientation yet.
With just 30 days to go before Mermaids begin their challenge to our charitable status, we will be sharing one reason every day until then showing why LGB Alliance is so needed by LGB people. (Thread)🧵
1: We made a short film to celebrate the lives of older gay men and are ensuring that 30% of the tickets to the very swanky London premiere are free or discounted 👇
1/6 Why your support for LGB Alliance is effective and really matters (thread).
The govt's decision to abandon plans for a Bill to ban Conversion Therapy is a sign of the confidence that, in general, conversion therapy practices for LGB people are already illegal in this country
2/6 The UK is a fantastic place to be lesbian, gay or bisexual. It’s also a fantastic place to be transgender. Nowhere in the world are trans people more visible, or their rights better guaranteed.
The UK leads the world with our legislation on equality.
3/6 Sexual orientation and gender reassignment are both protected characteristics in the Equality Act and the rights of each group must always be balanced.
We welcome these early findings from the Cass Review. It confirms our view that this service has not been subject to the normal quality controls elsewhere in the NHS. This is even more important with highly experimental treatments. 1/5
We thank @DalgetySusan for her passionate dissection of @kezdugdale's article in support of @scotgov's Gender Reform Bill. The fate of 16 year old lesbians and 16 year old gay boys is what has always animated us. It’s why we were founded. 1/6
We happen to believe it’s a tragic irony that many prominent LGB figures assume 16 year olds know their own minds with utter certainty and should be encouraged to embark on a process of “changing their gender” with no safeguarding at all. 2/6
We believe that in a society where homophobia is still a huge factor it is inevitable that this must influence the “convictions” of some 16 year olds who are gay. 3/6
1./ LGB History.
It’s worth reminding ourselves how far we’ve come. In the @BBC archives there’s a film from 1967 that set out to “reveal the truth about homosexual men”. It opens in a gay disco, and a classic line, “For many of us this is revolting: men dancing with men”. 👀👇
2./ The film-makers then track down a doctor, “who is also a homosexual”. He confides people are often shocked gay men who are taken to court can find witnesses to their good character. “Why on earth shouldn’t a homosexual have a good character?”, he rightly points out.👇
3./ Two great social changes collide in the next clip where the doctor lights up a cigarette as he rebuffs the idea being a homosexual man might be a disadvantage in his profession. Not at all, he says. “Especially when it comes to women.”
