High level performers executing mental imagery/shadow reps:

A thread...
Mental imagery often referred to as visualization or mental rehearsal, is the process of creating mental experiences in your mind’s eye that resemble actual physical experiences.

Experiences that you have already encountered or experiences that you are preparing to encounter.
When viewed as a skill to be developed rather than some random practice, mental imagery allows you to increase the quality of your preparation, build your confidence, and decrease the time it takes for skill acquisition by internalizing and seeing performance in your mind’s eye.
@TheNotoriousMMA prior to his fight with Jose Aldo used mental imagery to knockout Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds to secure the belt at @ufc 194.
@drewbrees executing mental reps - he is the only one on the field 45 minutes after practice still executing shadow reps to prepare for the game the following night.
In this picture, two @Yankees practicing mental reps behind their teammate taking the actual rep.

In this video you see @ClaytonKersh22 executing a shadow bullpen prior to his start in the #NLCS.
Here @ClaytonKersh22 is again practicing a shadow rep on the game mound, prior to his start. Getting his feet on the mound allows him to better mentally rehearse and visualize that night before his start with the @Dodgers .
@JArrieta34 discussing mental reps and visualization - he processed and visualized every scenario so that anything thrown at him, he is prepared for.
"I've already processed it. I've already visualized the scenarios. So I feel like anything that's thrown at me tomorrow - or really in any game - im ready to handle."
A @FSU_Softball player practicing her routines and visualizing reps in a shadow bullpen.
@JDayGolf discussing mental imagery and how uses this skill on the course as a part of his pre shot routine.
@AlexHonnold talking about the importance of mental imagery during his preparation for his #FreeSolo Climb of #ElCapitan. I love how he builds in all of the senses here to make this more real.
@TCU_Baseball players getting mental reps IN GAME, practicing their signal light release (Red/Yellow Light) and refocus (Green Light) routines.

They are watching the opposing pitcher and their teammate hitting and executing their routine.

Pitch to pitch.
@Tua executing mental imagery while doing shadow reps. Combining learning a new playbook for the @MiamiDolphins with visualizing the mental reps.
@SMUFB with ALL of their quarterbacks practicing mental reps during a drill in practice where they would otherwise be standing on the sideline watching..
@bakermayfield on executing mental reps...
@CarliLloyd talking about her mental preparation and visualization prior to the 2015 @FIFAWWC.
@stylebender practicing his walkout with shadow reps prior to his @ufc title fight.

Visualizing and feeling the atmosphere prior to the experience.
When practiced correctly, these are powerful tools in our mental performance toolbox.

Whether we’re aware of it or not, the mental images we create and carry around (both positive and negative) have a direct impact on physical and mental performance.
Success leaves clues.

If all of these high level performers are executing shadow reps/mental imagery, why wouldn’t you?
Everything happens twice.

First in your mind.

Then in reality.

23 lessons I learned from my mentor @KenRavizza1 that will serve you in 2023:

A thread...
1. Look inside for the answers to life’s questions, not outside.

This message is from one of Ken’s Philosophy of Sport classes and this overhead was the inspiration behind my first tattoo… the existential man. Image
2. You have to be in control of yourself before you can control your performance.

If you want to perform at a higher level, you must be in control of yourself.
