The Run Down
While the Black Sea Grain Initiative is solving a major issue it’s important to occasionally remind ourselves that there should never have been a need for it. Russia should not have any say about which Ukrainian ports are open or what Ukraine can export from them.
Moreover, Russia should not have any right to to inspect ships coming or going from Ukrainian ports nor should they be allowed to slow down exports by delaying these inspections.
This does not detract from the impressive effort both the UN and Turkey have applied to making the BSGI a functional reality which contributes to food security for so many around the globe. But it’s important to remind ourselves that all of this should never have happened.

Which country has the largest number of shipments as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative? Unsurprisingly it’s Türkiye. Because Türkiye processes a lot of the grains before they are exported they are the destination for 163 ships and have a higher volume of smaller loads.
