As promised for #LongCOVID peeps. I have had #COVID 3x and I still struggle with #LongCOVID because it flares with every infection. I likely keep getting it because of the immunocompromise with #LongCOVID. 🧵on the who, what and how based on the nature paper mentioned on @abc730
Who gets #LongCOVID?
10–30% of non-hospitalized
50–70% of hospitalized
10–12% of vaccinated
All ages & highest % in 36-50 year olds MOSTLY WOMEN
Most people with #LongCOVID had a mild infection 1/3 of people with #LongCOVID have no pre-existing conditions
Risk factors of #LongCOVID:
Type 2 diabetes
EBV reactivation
Autoimmune and connective tissue disorders
ADHD
Chronic skin conditions
Allergic rhinitis
Women
Certain ethnicities
Lower income
Inability to adequately rest in the early weeks after #COVID
Severe #COVID infection and also possibly other viruses in the body getting reactivated because of #COVID eg EBV, HHV6.
Longer term implications of #LongCovid
Increase risk of blood clots, heart disease and neurological conditions.
When is #LongCovid? variable
-Brain🧠weeks-months after infection & persist longer
-Lung 🫁& gut symptoms resolve faster
-Aches & pains, hair loss, blurry vision & swelling more common later ie at 1 year
-Loss of smell can start at 3 months but resolves
What is the impact of vaccination on #LongCovid?
-16.7% ⬇️of symptoms
-21.4% ⬆️of symptoms
-Rest unchanged
What is the risk of reinfections on #LongCovid?
-⬆️risk of more #LongCOVID and ME/CFS after 2nd & 3rd infection, even in 2 and 3 vaxed!
-⬆️susceptibility to reinfection
What can you do?
-Avoid #COVID
-Get treated and rest when you get #COVID
-Find doctors who know about #LongCovid (a challenge I know 😒)
-Learn about your condition so you are not dismissed
-Early evidence based treatments so far in table below

I am grateful for all the follows and would like to share a thread summarising the nature paper discussed on the @abc730. Even without #longcovid#COVID can affect your whole body. For my #LongCOVID peeps another thread when I can.
🧵
A study of low risk patients looking at the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and spleen post #COVID showed:
-70% at least 1 organ and 29% had multiorgan damage. -At 1 year 59% had 1 organ and 27% multiorgan damage.
Also⬆️risk of type 2 diabetes.
Heart 🫀
Even without #LongCOVID blood vessel damage and significant ⬆️ risk of heart disease (heart failure, rhythm abnormalities and stroke), independent of the severity of #COVID.
Heart scan study showed impairment in 78% after #COVID at an average of 71 days post infection.
