There's a lot of confusion, some intentionally caused by politicians, about the concepts of the Debt Ceiling, the Deficit, the National Debt and spending. And a lot of misleading claims about exactly how we got here.
So I did some homework and made some charts.
Our government takes in a lot of money every year. Most of it comes from individuals who pay income taxes as well as people who pay payroll taxes. Surprisingly, a lot less of it than we might think comes from Corporate Income Taxes.
Our government also spends a lot of money a year. Most of it is spent on Social Security, Medicare, Defense, Interest on the Debt we already paid and a few other giant bucket items.
Gerrymandering affects Federal House and State Legislative Elections.
It can’t affect statewide elections (Governor, U.S. Senator) and (with the exception of Maine and Nebraska) can’t affect U.S. Presidential races either.
Case in point: Wisconsin.
Wisconsin has been the closest Presidential state since 2000. In Presidential races, in which every person in the state votes in the same contest, WI has been decided by less than a point in 4 of the last 6 Presidential contests.
But contrast that with the House and State Legislative races, which, unlike Presidential races, are subject to gerrymandering.
Republicans lead the WI State Senate 22-11. They lead the WI State House 64-35. And they lead the WI US House delegation 6-2.
The former officers who killed Tyre Nichols are likely going to find themselves in a different predicament than other officers who have killed black motorists during traffic stops.
The people who have been quick to publicly defend white cops who kill black civilians are not going to be in their corner.
These black former cops are not going to get invited to appear on Tucker Carlson’s show.
Neither they or their families are likely to get any support from their own community.
And they won’t be invited to speak at a Republican Women’s Dinner event either.
The Back the Blue crowd is going to be pretty quiet.
The modern-day Republican Party’s worst fear is actually the white voter who has critical thinking skills and who is not beset by racial fears or resentments.
Because such a voter is immune to most of their talking points.
What does the GOP do with a white voter who can’t be frightened into thinking that they’re being “replaced,” that dark people from the south are coming to destroy their entire existence or that their children are somehow being taught to hate themselves?
Their messages don’t land
What does the GOP do with the white voter who does not take the messages they hear on Fox News, from pundits or from their Republican politicians as unchallenged fact?
What do they do with people who fact check them and see if they’re telling the truth or not?
We owe $32 trillion in debt as a nation. It wasn’t borrowed by one party or the other. Everybody played a part in accruing this debt. Sometimes for good reason (major recession, etc).
We have to pay more then $300 billion this year on INTEREST on the debt we ALREADY borrowed.
We don’t have that money because we spend more than we take in from taxes. So what do we have to do to pay for our PREVIOUS debt? We have to borrow it.
