I had the opportunity last night to attend a local school board emergency session to discuss how to respond to a highly-respected curriculum director recorded and used on a “school choice” propaganda video. (Thread)

The video was created by an organization called “Accuracy in Media.” In these Orwellian times, you may surmise what that means. They lied to the school to get a chance to sit with the curriculum director, then sliced and spliced footage into a video.
The closest things they caught to damning information were (1) a statement that if a CRT law were passed, they may have to change the way they label discussion topics; and (2) she used staff development grant funds to purchase “White Fragility” for teachers to read if they chose.
Something gratifying to come out of this: in this fairly conservative community, despite what we’ve seen in so many places, there was a massive public turnout—overwhelmingly supporting this administrator.
Despite a 3 1/2 hour executive session before the public portion, the room was full when they came out. And eight people took the opportunity to speak to the board—7 of us doing so in support of this curriculum director.
I was fortunate enough to get to speak right after the one exception—someone who raised the concern that “White Fragility” could be anywhere near a school ever, and noting that it might be illegal. 🤦‍♂️
I did my best to do so respectfully; I don’t want the board to feel like the relationship with the public is antagonistic. I advised the gentleman who spoke before I did to read the book, as it is informative, thoughtful, and well-researched.

I followed by noting that many of the teachers with whom I’ve spoken are afraid. They feel all they do is being scrutinized for censorship. They assign student-selected novels rather than class novels for fear of being called out for random inappropriateness.
I concluded by saying this is the moment for the Board to send the message that it will stand behind its teachers and staff—or to show all their best teachers that their fears are well-founded.
After the community members who signed up to speak did so, Board members spoke as well. After laying out some of their thoughts, I responded with this email this morning to address what some of them said: ImageImage
Their responses so far have been thoughtful and appreciative. I share all of this for two purposes: first, to show some of what is happening out there. People are lying and attacking educators for political purposes: in this case, to drive money away from public schools.
Second, these Board meetings are a real opportunity. If the most present people are those antagonistic to education, we’re all in trouble. When things are happening, show up. You won’t always win, but your presence matters. Local groups and issues matter.

America’s political right is the home of the chest-thumpingest brand of “patriotism” on the planet. But it’s also where you find the highest concentration of people telling you what this country can’t do. (Thread)

“This is the greatest country in the world,” they say. But they deem it incapable of managing to provide health care for everyone—something most developed countries now do in some fashion.
“This is the greatest country in the world,” they say. But in the face of ever-mounting gun deaths, they also believe we are the only country in the world incapable of regulating guns.

Today should serve as a stark reminder that history isn’t about caricatured heroes. We should all celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr.—but not through reduction into the simplest, most pleasant terms. (Thread)

King believed in “militant non-violence.” But his movement wasn’t a Pollyanna exercise in passivity, or in everyone holding hands and playing nicely. It was a movement for change, for refusing to accept the status quo or wait for it to change.

And while the early focus was legal segregation in the south, he knew that racism wasn’t solved or eradicated with the Voting Rights Act or other legal progress. A fight against the hate and prejudice people hold in their hearts has always been harder.

Today’s GOP process: the right wing media outrage mavens throw out an accusation or attack. The politicians amplify it and say it’s what Americans care about. They then tweet nonsense and offer no solutions to the problem. (Thread)

It’s like a game of buzzword bingo. The winner gets to run over to the Fox studio and regurgitate the lines that Fox fed them in the first place. Instead of working to help Americans, they are dancing like marionettes on right wing strings.
Right-wing media companies do it because it makes them money to foment outrage and then collect ad revenue. The politicians do it because appearing on these outlets gets them more donations.

We can’t have a shared political discourse in this country without having a shared language with which to conduct it. I would love for every interview of a political figure to work toward this by digging in on buzzwords. (Thread)

Accusations of “communism”? How so? What are you saying is communist? Private companies making free-market decisions you don’t like? A government providing health care options to promote the “general welfare”? What exactly are you attacking?
You say LGBTQ people are “groomers”? What do you mean by that? What part of their existence constitutes “grooming” by your definition?

Tonight’s #FridayLimericks note Nick Fuentes, symptom of the GOP’s disease. #LimerickRhyme
There’s a wee little MAGAt named Nick,
Now a part of Republicans’ schtick.
He likes stirring the pot,
But he’s not worth a lot:
Just one more young professional prick.
Nick’s a blowhard, and not really smart—
So just how did this kid get his start?
He’s that Charlottesville fool
Who then dropped out of school
To become one more YouTubing shart.

time.com/4905939/nichol…
Fuentes’ background’s not all that unique;
His self-hatred has little mystique.
Just a self-loathing guy
Lashing out on the fly
To lay claim to the whiteness he’d seek.

Tonight’s #FridayLimericks are still looking for that red wave. #LimerickRhyme
Though republicans roared from the sea,
Seems their red wave just wasn’t to be.
As their bellowing thins,
Now the blame game begins—
And the former guy’s allies all flee.
washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…
Junior promised a “bloodbath” was here—
So then why did that guy disappear?
The momentum all froze
While Don “powdered his nose,”
With no chance for his usual sneer.
newsweek.com/donald-trump-j…
The historical trends would suggest
We’d be stanching the bleeding at best.
But with sanity purged,
Too much MAGA emerged—
And did worse than the pundits had guessed.
