Rick: Nikki Haley announced that on Feb 15 she'll announce she's running for Pres. The pie fight begins.
Doug Jones: I think a lot of Repub Pres. wannabes see Trump as a wounded animal. I think "pie fight" is being a little too gracious, Rick!
@DougJones
Doug Jones: Nikki Haley started out wanting to do her best for the people of SC but then became too entrenched in the Trump organization. She's trying to outdo DeSantis.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: This primary will be about division, about whipping up a base. Every candidate will talk about unifying the country but when you strip away those sound bites, you'll see culture wars coming out of nearly every GOP candidate.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: We've heard for 40 yrs that Dems will confiscate guns. No one's done it yet--it's the most ridiculous thing I've heard. There's big money in some of the special interest groups, & there's also big money in media.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: I think DeSantis is stoking fears; I think Youngkin is stoking fears in VA.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: I want to give a shout out to Chris Stirewalt & his book, Broken News: Why the Media Rage Machine Divides America and How to Fight Back. Chris is the one who called AZ for Biden & got fired for it.

Doug Jones: People will do or say just about anything to get & keep power.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: Raising the debt limit is for all of those bill that have been stacking up over time, incl those that stacked up during the Trump admin. The consequences are dire. At the end of the day, the debt ceiling needs to be raised one way or another.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: It would be a worldwide problem if the US defaulted on its debt promises.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: Inflation is slowly getting back under control but we still have the war in Ukraine.
@DougJones
Rick: Medicare & Social Security are not entitlement programs--we earned those. We pay for them with payroll taxes.
#RickShow
Doug Jones: The Fed raised rates by 1/4 point instead of 1/2 point or more. That's a good sign.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: We're seeing an uptick in union membership. Alabama led the country in union membership last year--we're a union state & it helped the state a lot.
@DougJones #UnionYes #UnionStrong #1u
Doug Jones: Donald Trump & his tax cuts for the largest corporations contributed a lot to the debt. Another big part of the debt is COVID. Something not a lot of people know is that the Biden admin has lowered that debt by $1 trillion.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: If people want to play chicken, do it for just a little bit. The closer we get to the debt ceiling, things get jittery & people get nervous. They'll move their stocks into cash.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: All of this is about the documents, about getting them back. That's why the DOJ gave Trump every benefit of the doubt to return the documents. Someone in the Trump world kept saying to come back, there's more--and there was.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: I can tell you first hand--way too many documents are classified. We need to classify fewer documents. I'd love to talk more about that another time.

Bob Ney: I don't think Marjorie Taylor Greene or Gosar will go to a martyr status. Of all the people who could be removed from a committee, there'd be more outrage over Schiff than Omar.
@bobney
Bob Ney: I didn't think it was a good idea when the Dems didn't, it wasn't a good idea when the Repubs did it, & now they've both done it. MTG said some outrageous, obnoxious things, & Omar said some things I don't really care for. It's precedence-setting on both sides.
@bobney
Bob Ney: I read the articles about the giant balloon over the US; I am in favor of shooting it down, especially if it goes over an uninhabited piece of land.
Rick: My first thought was to shoot it down but it could become a ramp-up moment if they shoot down one of ours.

Fred Wellman: The giant Chinese balloon flew over my house today in Missouri. The idea that someone could fly something over my head & take pictures of us...wait a minute. One of my Repub reps sent out 9 tweets about the balloon.
@FPWellman @BeerHallProject @ProjectLincoln
Fred Wellman: The Chinese balloon is the classic "Look over here & not over there!" I was a spokesman for the Pentagon for a while; the military tries to stay out of politics but messes things up in doing so. Biden deferred to military

Fred Wellman: If we shoot down China's balloon, then they'll shoot down one of ours.

Emily Andrews: The Family Medical Leave Act is an incredibly important piece of legislation. It's not just the pay, FMLA is flawed--the size of the employer, how long you've worked there, how much you make all affects your ability to take unpaid leave.
@emilymandrews @CLASP_DC
Emily Andrews: There are a number of bills to increase the number of people who can qualify for FMLA. The biggest obstacle to FMLA? People can't afford to take 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

Emily Andrews: We are the only industrialized nation without paid leave.

Matías Vernengo: The Fed may say they want a soft landing & not cause a recession, but it looks bad on the Fed if they appear to be weak on inflation. I think Repubs want chaos.
@NakedKeynes @BucknellU
Matías Vernengo: If the Fed didn't already cause a recession, housing prices may throw us in a recession. If we dodge that bullet, then I think Repubs will want to throw us in a recession & it would be political.
@NakedKeynes @BucknellU
Rick: I think some members of Congress are like the kids you tell not to touch the hot stove--they have to touch it to see what happens. They may have to learn the hard way what happens if they don't raise the debt ceiling.

Rick: The thought of Tucker Carlson getting slapped around a little...
Sarah Burris: He's probably into that. He might even be into wearing diapers or something.
Rick: That's an image I never want to see.

Sarah Burris: Remember when McCarthy said the first thing he was going to do as Speaker was read the Constitution every day? Well, that hasn't happened yet so clearly he doesn't support the Constitution.
@SarahBurris @RawStory
Sarah Burris: As long as Repubs concentrate on performative things, like praying & saying the Pledge of Allegiance, they don't actually have to govern. They hope no one will notice.

Lisa Graves: School "choice" is the language they adopted from the actual choice movement. There was an effort to resist racial integration in schools, & in 1954 the Supreme Court said kids couldn't be segregated by race in school.
@thelisagraves @itstruenorth
Lisa Graves: The school choice schemes we've seen funnel public money into private hands with no oversight, no accountability. They're often taught by people unqualified to teach.
@thelisagraves @itstruenorth
Lisa Graves: I remember meeting a woman in my geology class, my lab partner, who said she believed the earth was no older than 8000 yrs old. She'd been homeschooled & was taught from the Bible.
