#TodayInHistory King Leopold II of Belgium establishes the Congo Free State in 1885, effectively making it his personal fiefdom, that would begin a reign of Terror, where natives were massacred, tortured, starved to death, and it's resources looted.
Leopold ran Congo using his own military force, to oversee the large rubber plantations. Workers who failed to meet the specific rubber quota, were either killed or had their hands chopped off. The precious ivory was looted in large numbers.
Leopold enriched his personal fortune, looting the Congo dry of it's resources, first it was ivory, and later rubber. The cultivation was done using forced labor, the rubber plantation atrocities were as terrible as those of the slaves on US plantations.
The brutalities of King Leopold II in Congo, were on par with that of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, or rather he was the predecessor of them all. Close to a million died, the place was stripped and looted of it's natural resources.

Aman ki Asha brigade and Congressis like Shashi Tharoor are more upset with #PervezMusharraf death than ordinary Pakistanis most of whom hate him. That guy was a bloody butcher who has the blood of 500 Indian Soldiers on his hand courtesy Kargil.
Musharraf was openly proud of the fact that Pakistan became a terror adda during his reign, and sheltered Osama Bin Laden, but yeah he praised Dhoni's locks during some cricket match, oh so cute. This Aman Ki Asha brigade are the biggest bunch of jokers ever.
It's ok Mushy loved Dhoni's long locks, visited Taj Mahal, we miss him so much.
Satyendranath Bose or more popularly known as S.N.Bose. Well known for the Bose-Einstein condensate theory. And also a class of particles called Bosons named after him by Paul Dirac. One of the great scientists of modern era.
Thread.
But then again to call S.N.Bose just a scientist, would be akin to calling Leonardo Da Vinci a mere painter. Much like his other namesake and contemporary, J.C.Bose, he was a polymath, equally adept in music, literature, mineralogy.
The multi facted genius was born on January 1, 1894 in a middle class Kolkata family, his father Surendranath Bose, an accountant in the East India Railway Company. The only son in a family that had six daughters after him.
One of my favourite singers Vani Jairam passes away, and just two days after K Viswanath gaaru passed away, for whom she sang those memorable songs in Swathikiranam and Shankarabharanam. And she had just got the Padma Bhushan recently.
And this remains one of my Vani Jairam favorite songs, clasical song pulled off so effortlessly.
Two persons closely associated with Shankarabharanam, first K.Viswanath and now Vani Jairam departing in space of two days, that too around the anniversary of the movie's release. Maybe it's Shankara's will himself.
#TodayInHistory The epic battle of Sinhagad, takes place in 1670, when Tanaji Malusare, and his Maval army capture the fort from the Mughals, in one of the most daring assaults ever in history. #JaiBhavani#JaiShivaji
When you walk around Pune , and the surrounding areas, you feel the valor of the Marathas at every step. Pune itself home of the Peshwas, Raigad where Shivaji was coronated, Purandhar, Pratapgarh , all those names resonate with the glory of one of India’s greatest sons.
But it is Sinhagad , which takes your breath away, with it’s sheer grandeur, originally called as Kondhana, around 25 km northwest of Pune, located at an altitude of around 4400 m above sea level.
There are many things to explore in the movies of #KVishwanath but one thing I had always found fascinating is the women characters in his movies, strong, well written characters, and he bought the best out in every actress.
Thread.
And it started with one of his early movies Sharada, not that well known to many. The titular character played by Sharada herself, is a naive innocent village girl, married to a doctor played by Shoban Babu who unfortunately dies on the first night, in an accident.
She however believes her husband is still alive, and then meets his look alike, a pyschiatrist who comes to her village for a function. On her brother Madhava(Satyanarayana)'s request he agrees to act as her husband to help her mentally. A terrific performance by Sharada.
#TodayInHistory Shivaji Maharaj defeats the Mughal army under Kartalab Khan in a narrow gorge at the Battle of Umberkhind in 1661, a decisive victorythat further consolidated his position and strengthened the Marathas.
Around 4 km from Khemabari village in the Khalapur taluk of Raigad district, on the Khapoli-Poli road, is located a small tri junction at Chavani. The Amba river here originates from the foot of a small cone, near to Kurnawade village in the Maval Taluka.
The river passes by Umarkhandi along the Garmal valley, and merging with the Nagothane creek, before it merges into the sea.Umberkhind is one of the many ghats in the Nain-Maval area, located right below Kurnawade Ghat.
