On a secure train returning from an EU trip to Kyiv, @JosepBorrellF told @WSJ that critics of his efforts to revive the pact perhaps “don’t value enough” dangers of nuclear Iran. “As far as I know, there is not an alternative to this deal to try to avoid Iran becoming nuclear"-2-
He says people mix up his role as coordinator for deal & EU role in condemning Iran actions. “Look, I can tell you my last conversation: Stop capital punishment. Stop repression…So if you continue on this way, you will make impossible to have any kind of political arrangement"-3
There's a clear warning from @JosepBorrellF that #Iran providing ballistic missiles to #Russia would be a "step too far," after which everything will become more difficult, including reviving the deal. -4-
“I have to say that every time I talk with the Iranians, they insist that they will not do it,” @JosepBorrellF said of #Iran selling missiles to #Russia. “But then I have to advise them, if you do that, everything will be much more difficult, including the JCPOA." -5-
And he's frank that in the current political environment, with Iran's crackdown at home, its Russia help and teh western reaction to this, he doesn't know if the E3 & US would agree to revive deal even if Iran dropped its extraneous demands on deal... (safeguards etc.) -6-
“Today, the political environment doesn’t help...I don’t know. I clearly don’t know and I don’t want to speculate," said @JosepBorrellF on prospects of Iran deal's revival. -7-
And kicker: 'Mr. Borrell refuses to pin the blame for the nuclear deal’s woes on Tehran or the Biden administration. But he offered a terse response when asked who was responsible for the agreement’s near-collapse. “Trump,” he said.' wsj.com/articles/eus-t… -8-

Michel had pushed for the trip when he was in Kyiv on Jan 19th. @ZelenskyyUa was reluctant because of perfectly reasonable security concerns. But he warmed to idea in recent weeks & was already leaning towards when EU leaders in Kyiv last week. -2-
During the last few weeks, @ZelenskyyUa team reached out to @EmmanuelMacron team to float the idea of a visit to Paris as well as Brussels. Plan was to go there first. The idea seemed to have legs but no invite to visit ever reached @ZelenskyyUa from Paris. -3-
Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia pressing today in a letter on use of frozen assets for Ukraine. "However in order to be credible on this matter vis-a-vis Ukraine, we must go beyond reiterating our commitment & accelerate our work in the Council right now." -1-
"All assets should be used to cover the costs of Russian aggression against Ukraine, including to support Ukraine internally displaced people, as well as to the benefit of the future reconstruction of Ukraine." -2-
"We should be more creative in examining the possible scope & further options to enhance the impact of our measures." Letter calls on EU leaders this week to give "concrete guidance to the Commission" on compensation. -3-
@HankeVela@alanbeattie This really isn't unexpected. It's expected. It has been likely she'd go for a couple of weeks as I've tweeted.
@HankeVela@alanbeattie Indeed, as i said earlier, one of the UK conditions was that a non-EU country host it next time and Britain was keen. It's a way of locking in their main concern -- that this becomes a mere EU+ Brussels dominated format.
@HankeVela@alanbeattie My understanding is also that U.K. also did NOT give an unconditional yes to Truss attending today. Am told the U.K. said “IF the Pm were to attend her priorities would be xyz.” Which is in line with 4 conditions mentioned this morning.
Thank god we didn’t send those modern tanks. Or Putin would have escalated.
On a less sarcastic note, what does this say about Putin’s utter disrespect for institutions like UN and for those all too many heads of state trying to stay neutral on this? He does it right in the middle of UNGA where so many of the neutrals are pleasing for conflict end.
I wonder how Russia’s UN diplomats are feeling this morning as they try to win the narrative about western sanctions vs Putin’s war? Putin might as well have gone to NY and stood up and said: “it’s my war and I’m never going to give up my imperial conquest.”
Lots of attention reasonably on Raisi's comments to @60Minutes about the Holocaust but less on his response to questions about his alleged role in killing of opposition political prisoners. Yet the response is extraordinary whatever your views of the MeK. Here's transcript: -1-
Q: I want to ask you about your own record. There is a personal sanction against you. You took part in a commission that was responsible for executing up to 5,000 political dissidents. They were hanged or shot by firing squad. I want to ask if you regret that action.-2-
Q2: You’re saying that that was not true?...
RAISI: Anybody who commits a crime in Iran stands trial in official courts of law and they receive punishments for what they did. They were assassinating people. And what happened to them was exactly proportionate to what they did.-3-
Pretty stinging rebuke of Russia by IAEA board. 26 in favor and 2 against. (Russia, China), The board "expresses grave concern that the Russian Federation has not heeded the call of the Board to immediately cease all actions against and at nuclear facilities in Ukraine;" -1-
