In the coming days/weeks, geologists from California (& everywhere else) will arrive in southern Turkey to document, measure, & study the East Anatolian Fault Zone (green bracket) and the effects of these major earthquakes. #TurkeyEarthquake
But why? 1/3
Because the East Anatolian Fault is a complex fault system that's similar to the San Andreas Fault in CA:
• Both are strike-slip faults that form part of a major plate boundary
• Both have generated M7.8-7.9 earthquakes historically - SAF (1857, 1906) & EAF (2023) 2/3
So, learning from earthquakes anywhere helps us anticipate the effects of earthquakes wherever they occur. Specifically, the similarity of the faults in Turkey to those in California makes understanding these earthquakes particularly important for preparing for the future. 3/3

WHOA! Prelim. M7.8 earthquake in southern Turkey, near the triple junction of the Anatolian, Arabian, & African Plates. #earthquake
USGS damage estimates are *bad* for the M7.8 earthquake near the Turkey-Syria border. Estimated deaths in the 100s & damages around $1 billion. So sad. #earthquake
Within 11 minutes there was a M6.7 aftershock to the M7.8 main shock. That's one hell of a 1-2 punch. #earthquake#Turkey#Syria
