🚨:: Does Google use Bounce Back Rate? ::🚨

*sigh*
It's not even 2 years since I last covered this!

🧡>>>

#SEO #BounceRate #BounceBackRate #BounceBackToSERP Image
2/?

Here's the thread I did at the end of 2021...

But if you don't want to read through that,
I'll do a quick summary here...

>>>
3/?

Bounce Rate (BR) is an "Analytics" metric.
Dwell Time is a made up metric.
Click Through Rate (CTR) is a SERP metric.

G have stated none are used for Rankings.

But they "do" use user-behaviour in the SERP,
for various things (such as gauging algo performance etc.).

>>>
4/?

So we instantly hit Google's "semantic slide",
where they can answer truthfully/honestly,
and yet mislead at the same time.

Simply having a different name permits it.

Through in that the metrics people keep on asking are simplistic, shallow, limited etc.

>>>
5/?

There are numerous patents and papers for
"implicit feedback"
(user search/SERP behaviours)
which cover a range of potential uses,
ranging from spotting trending queries,
including algo performance gauging,
through to potential satisfaction proxies.

>>>
6/?

People will likely do better to get the concept of
"search sessions".
This may be a single query, or include multiple variations/refinements,
clicking on "suggestions" etc.
(So long as the primary topic/nature remains the same, it's the same session)

>>>
7/?

How often do you do a search,
click a result,
decide the page isn't for you,
hit the back button,
click another result
(or click a suggestion etc.)
?

There you go.

>>>
8/?

It's NOT:

* Bounce Rate
(only n% have GA setup, and BR includes closes etc.)

* Click Through Rate
(On it's own, weak/noisy - consider "last click" instead)

* Dwell Time (long/short click)
(Short time + a new search session is not the same as short/long + 2nd click)

>>>
9/?

* Pogo Sticking
(The influence would be dependent on whether the search session remains, or is amended etc.)

Each every single metric and shallow reference is flawed, as they can be noisy.

Instead, you need to look at multiple features.

>>>
10/?

If you've seen the latest tweet by @indexsy

You'll note the phrasing "used to have".
This could be a simple back reference,
or suggesting that it's not used "now".

Personally, I'm willing to bet G still user SERP Behaviours,
but not simply.

>>>
11/?

So - do yourself (and everyone else) a massive favour;
don't over-simplify the concept of SERP Behaviours for Ranking.

Terms like "Bounce Rate" have no relevance.
Things like "CTR" are too simple/noisy.

>>>
12/?

G would have to combine multiple factors to make a strong enough signal to punch through all the noise.

AND ... they'd have to implement protections against click-farms/bots etc.

>>>
13/?

This is an age-old concept, and plenty have tried to abuse it ... so G are likely looking at
Quantity over Duration (consistency/trend)
as well as multiple individual factors (returns, position, CTR etc.).

:: This is NOT what you are meant to be doing! ::

This is a shining example of the flawed logic,
and Keyword Lead approach that I keep on saying to avoid!

If you're agency does either of these,
look for better!

Yes - "Keywords" are important,
as is knowing Search Volume and Competition Level/Strength.

But you should not be creating pages based around such things.
Instead - you should be basing it around Prospects/Audience, and their Needs/Wants/Expectations.

>>>
>>>

Where's the Buyer Guides?
Where's the Range Comparisons?
Where's the Spec/Tech Sheets?
(and at least 5 other content formats!)

These are the pages that help prospects to decide
not only what to buy,
but to buy it from you!

They appear for earlier-stage searches.

🚨:: Should you be writing that? ::🚨

Okay, this one may ruffle some feathers,
but hopefully it will drive home some of the reasons that some sites get hit, or don't rank etc.

Sadly, the answer is to often - NO

>>>

#SEO #ContentCreation Image - top down depiction of a plain-paper note book, open on a wooden table top. On the left hand page, is some hand writing; large letters, 1 word per line. Reads: "Should you be writing that". On the right, is a single character - a large, heavy question mark.
2/?

It's such a simple question ...
... but so many get the answer wrong.

The result is - a huge number of people producing content, about topics/subjects that they don't really know.

And it shows!

How?

Because those people do "research" before they "write"!

>>>
3/?

Note the "quotes" around:
* Research
* Write

That's because - as much as some would like to believe otherwise,
looking at the top N results,
then rewording them,
is Not Research nor Writing!

(And I know - some tools help you do just that!)

🚨:: Google and SEO ::🚨

Something that's become readily apparent,
is that a large percentage of peoples
understanding of SEO
is somewhat skewed,
and they don't see/understand it from Googles perspective.

>>>

#SEO Image
2/?

In the most simplest view,
G see's 3 main aspects to SEO:
1) Crawling
2) Indexing
3) Ranking

And of those 3 aspects,
Google would prefer if people only focused on the first 2;
Crawling and Indexing.

G see Ranking as their job.

>>>
3/?

The more you do around Ranking,
the more you can be seen as manipulating, or abusing, or getting spammy etc.

Instead, SEO should focus on:
* ensuring content can be accessed by bots
* G is able to parse (and render) the content
* G knows what should be indexed

πŸš¨πŸ‘Ά:: Sorry, but, your baby's UGLY! ::πŸ‘ΆπŸš¨

I know.
It's not nice to hear.
But ... it's the truth.

That site (or little collection of) ...
... not as pretty (good) as you thought!

No - not all of you.
But many.

2/?

Okay - attention grab is over,
I'm not intending to insult you ... but it's a phrase that has the right meaning,
and applies to sooooo many right now.

You were ranking.
You were not ranking because you were the best.
You were not ranking because you were original.

>>>
3/?

You were ranking because G had a flaw (or several),
and in some cases,
some of you darn well knew you were using exploits!

Did you deserve to get tanked,
this hard?

NO!

But ... other side of the coin...
did some of the lower ranking sites deserve to be below you?

🚨:: >90% of pages get 0 SE Traffic? ::🚨

@nathangotch gives 3 reasons why this may happen,
(figure based on an @Ahrefs study (LINT))

1) Repeat tactic fails them
2) Wrong tactic
3) Inexperience

But, I've got a Very different perspective!

>>>

#SEO #Traffic #Content
2/?

:: 1- Logic ::
There may be tons of pages out there,
but simple logic says that they can't all be ranked top and get the clicks.

Typical CTR Distribution pushes most traffic to the top N pages.

>>>

<Link to the study should be below :D>
ahrefs.com/blog/search-tr…
3/?

:: 2- Dupes ::
G have stated that a significant part of the web (they've crawled) is duplicated!
And G tend to filter dupes - so a % of pages are unlikely to show, and thus generate no traffic.

:: 3- Bias ::
People go for Brands, Names etc.
They will get a % of clicks

:: Is Guest Posting Dead? ::

There's 2 parts to @mattdiggityseo's tweet I want to cover.

1) The Guest Posting part
2) The Link Assessment part

>>>

#SEO #GuestPosts #LinkBuilding
2/?

:: Guest Posting ::

I've said it before, and I'll say it again;
if you're primary motivator for GPing is "SEO Links",
you're doing it for the wrong reasons,
and likely to get it wrong.

Here's a whole bunch of reasons to do Guest Posts.

>>>
3/?

Guest Posting is part of Promotion (Marketing).
It's to show you know your stuff, to earn trust, reach new audiences etc.

You don't go on day time TV or talk shows to earn links!
You don't do Press interviews to earn links.

Why write for 3rd parties for links?
