BREAKING | @DefraGovUK admits breaching UK national legal ceiling for PM2.5 in 2021 in its new annual statistics for ‘Emissions of air pollutants in the UK’. Thread
“For PM2.5, there is a single annual ceiling of 80.8 thousand tonnes of emissions between 2020 and 2029 (set at a 30% reduction from 2005 levels), applicable to NECR and CLRTAP. In 2021, the UK was not compliant with this commitment, with 83.2 thousand tonnes of PM2.5 emissions”
PM2.5 annual emissions increased 6% between 2020 and 2021.
"Decreases since late 2000s in emissions from some sectors have been largely offset by increases in emissions from #WoodBurning in domestic settings and from solid fuel burning by industry (particularly biomass burning)”
“Domestic combustion is a major source of particulate matter emissions in 2021, accounting for 16% of PM10 emissions and 27% of PM2.5 emissions. Most emissions from this source come from households burning wood in closed stoves and open fires”
“…use of wood as a fuel accounted for 75% of PM2.5 emissions from domestic combustion in 2021. Emissions of PM2.5 from domestic wood burning increased by 124% between 2011 and 2021, to represent 21% of total PM2.5 emissions in 2021.”
2020: Emissions of PM2.5 from domestic wood burning increased 35% between 2010 and 2020 to represent 17% of total PM2.5 emissions in 2020.
2021: Emissions of PM2.5 from domestic wood burning increased 124% between 2011 and 2021 to represent 21% of total PM2.5 emissions in 2021.
Top sources of total UK total primary PM2.5 emissions in 2021:
1. Domestic wood burning 21% 2. Biomass fuel burning on industrial sites 18% 3. Industrial processes 13% 4. Non-exhaust road emissions eg tyre, brake and road wear 10% 5. Burning other fuels on industrial sites 8%
"It's devastating to discover that the Government breached the legal ceiling for the most dangerous air pollutant in 2021. Government must #BanWoodBurning"

#CodeYellow | Widespread MODERATE ozone and particle #AirPollution episode underway by Tuesday. Worsening sharply Wednesday and Thursday as winds turn easterly (bringing our fumes back to us with more from others). Check health advice and warn military on exercises cc @BWallaceMP
#CodeOrange alert | MODERATE ozone #AirPollution from Monday in London and building across much of southern UK by Wednesday. Possible #CodeRed in places by Friday. Nasty episode could continue until Sunday uk-air.defra.gov.uk
#EllasLaw | Coroner's 'Report to Prevent Future Deaths' said:
"@WHO guidelines should be seen as minimum requirements. Legally binding targets based on @WHO guidelines would reduce the number of deaths from air pollution in the UK"
Official #CodeRed alert | Major particle #AirPollution episode building as winds slow and turn easterly. MODERATE #AirPollution in places every day until HIGH 7-8/10 by Monday night or Tuesday. Check updates and health advice uk-air.defra.gov.uk
Official #CodeRed | Serious widespread MODERATE or HIGH particle and/or ozone for most of England and Wales on Monday, Tuesday. Scotland also by Wednesday. Check updates and health advice uk-air.defra.gov.uk
#PollutionAlertMidApril2020 | Nasty MODERATE particle #AirPollution episode underway. Possibly HIGH in South East England into weekend. Of course traffic pollution (nitrogen dioxide) is LOW but particles come from all sources eg agriculture, wood and rubbish burning, industry etc
