Oxford was the setting for several key events of the English Reformations. A particularly tragic event took place in the Cathedral #OnThisDay in 1556: the Degradation of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury.

a group was waiting to tear off Cranmer's vestments and dress him in sackcloth. The former Archbishop was then removed from the Cathedral and taken to Bocardo prison. Cranmer would burn at the stake, in #Oxford, on March 21st 1556.
