Maha Shiv Ratri is the day that is so auspicious that even pouring little water on Shivling can give one Moksha on the same day. It is more auspicious than all other pious festivals of all religions.

It is the most auspicious day of the year.

Why is that so - Many say that Bhagwan Shiva married on this day & that is wrong.

Shiva married on Chaitra Shukl paksh triyodashi Ravivar in Purva Falguni nakshatra. This is stated in Shiva Puran.

Brief description.

Maha Shiva Ratri is when Bhagwan SadaShiva first appeared in form of Agnistambh (Infinite Jyotirlinga).

When Vishnu & Brahma were having an argument, Bhagwan Shiva suddenly appeared in form of Infinite Jyotirlinga.

Both were amazed. To know about beginning & end of Agnistambh, Brahma moved upwards & Vishnu downwards, but in vain as they could not find its beginning & end. They came back to where they began. They tried to know what the jyotirlinga was.

Finally they bowed to infinite Jyotirlinga. They surrendered to Bhagwan Shiva and requested Bhagwan Shiva to show them, Sakar Swaroop (divine bodily form). They bowed and prayed there for 100 deva years.

Suddenly clear sound of Om Om … appeared and Bhagwan Shiva along with Maa Uma appeared first in Sabd-brahm form and then in Sakar Swaroop (divine bodily form).

Bhagwan Shiva with five faces & three moons on each face was looking auspicious & blissful. Seeing Bhagwan Shiva with Ma Uma both became ecstatic, stood still. Then they worshipped Bhagwan Shiva & Maa Uma. Pleased, Bhagwan Maheshwara Spoke -

“Sons! This is a great day. I am pleased with the Puja done by both of you. That's why this day would be considered most auspicious and great among greatest days. This day is the most favourite day of mine and will be called Maha Shiv Ratri.
